Hi all, I just bought a Eric Dickerson True School Authentics jersey off ebay and it doesn't have the "SMU" chest letters on it. I'm wondering if you guys remember if the jerseys from 1979 had the letters on them, I'm pretty sure that the ones from 1980 on did so I'd like to know if the jersey I bought is at all accurate.
Thanks!

you know they may not have had the letters through the 1970s. I have some pictures of Emanuel Tolbert 1977-1979 and they didn't have them but I'm not sure the year the picture was taken. If it has a wide white stripe between smaller red and blue stripes on the sleave they didn't have the letters SMU. Also there is a website called uniforms.com or something to that effect which shows the variations in uniforms over the year for all NCAA teams.

Hey, speaking of old uniforms, I have a question about Doak's. I've always imagined him in the red jersey and tan pants, like on that LIFE cover. But watching the Heisman presentation last night, I noticed his portrait had him wearing a royal blue jersey with red numbers outlined in white. Was this ever worn? Look in MrMustang1965's signature and you see the cartoon Peruna wearing a similar jersey, just with the letters SMU instead of numbers. I want one that says 37, I'll have to look into that.

This is the actual auction for my jersey with pictures:

Does it look similar to any of those pictures?

could it have anything to do with SMU not allowing any of the throwback people permission to put 'SMU' on one of their jerseys? It wouldn't surprise me

Naw, I've seen Adidas Dickerson jerseys with the SMU on the chest, so that couldn't be the case, I'm assuming they've officially licensed them as well since it is Adidas.
I thought it was a knockoff since I got it pretty cheap, but the material and tags and logos are all pretty much identical to my other adidas jerseys...

well the tag says it is a 1982 jersey and I know for sure that they had SMU letters on the front during that year. The color looks about right except in the picture the sleeves look like a different color-may be an optical illusion. And another thing that makes me suspicious is that all SMU running backs especially Dickerson and James wore a tear away jersey during that year-they changed the rules during the next couple of years to outlaw tear-aways.

Every photo of Dickerson I see in this year's FGMG shows "SMU" on his jersey...

I know Doak never wore a blue jersey and I don't think any Mustang did until Hayden Fry signed on. Bill Meek had some uniform gimmicks, but I don't think blue jerseys were part of the scheme. Ron Meyer's original set (following the off-beat Dave Smith uniform debacle) were kinda AAA looking... even had a set of jerseys with 'MUSTANGS' on the front instead of 'SMU'/sleeve stripes. Remember those costumes the coaching staff wore? Definitely a 70s era Las Vegas influence.

Here's the pic I was talking about, although I think the real portrait at the event was a little taller, and you could see more of the jersey.
Maybe this was a Detroit Lions jersey? Although, every other portrait was of the player in his college jersey. Maybe they took it from a black and white picture, and messed up the colors in the process.

I spoke to someone at DISTANT REPLAYS in Atlanta, and the guy there said a Doak Walker throwback jersey might be do-able, but would require royalty arrangements with SMU and with Doak's family. Does anyone out there with marketing experience have any clout with either ?

I remember my Dad telling me that SMU wore both red, and blue jerseys
with their RED helmets during the Walker/Rote time period. My Dad
graduated in 1950. I've got a VHS tape of the history of the SWC that
show us in red helmets with blue jerseys with white numbers in the early
50s.
As to the blue jerseys in the DickerJames years, both of them wore very
thin cheap tear aways without SMU at the top during the years tear
aways were legal.
It might'be been those 2 that got tear aways banned
