Of course it would be a "good problem" to have, but is there any realistic chance Coach Phil would stay?
Wouldn't alot of schools start offering him jobs?

Coach Bennett Stock Price If SMU Wins 7-8 in 2006?If SMU was to win 7 or 8 football games next year and go to some bowl what are the chances Coach Phil would be gone?

Are you kidding me? You're actually going to wonder what happens to Bennett... IF.. SMU has a winning season and/or bowl game?
My suggestion.. let's worry about that .. IF.. SMU gets there. Why should we start worrying or even thinking about that in the middle of a recruiting year that is very very up in the air, on-top of starting a QB that has yet to truly play in our system.. and with a Defense losing some of it's best players. Maybe we should concentrate on these problems before we kiss Phil good-bye and make plans for a winning season.. and heaven forbid.. a bowl for the first time since 1984. What we obtain too cheap.. we esteem too lightly. It is persistence alone that gives everything its value.
i bought a lot of phil bennet stock at the end of our zero win season
its had a nice return so far, but i am still waiting for the payoff
7 or 8 is actually not insane, not that you should bet on it but consider that we were one score away in the Baylor and ECU games and actually had the refs take the Marshall game away. That is eight right there. Not so crazy is it?

Beat whoever it is we are playing!! @PonyGrad
but you could argue just as persuasively that we were only 2 scores away from a 3 win season. Let's not forget that UAB was good execution and a lot of luck, and the same could be said of the Houston game. I'm optomistic, but I want to wait until I see this team play next year before I start predicting a winning season or better.

I can agree with you that we were just as close to 3 wins. The statement was made that anyone thinking 7 or 8 wins was insane. My point is not that we should expect 7 or 8 but rather that saying one was insane to hold out that hope is definitely over the top.
Presumably all can agree that with 3 wins over bowl teams and two more than last year, we are headed in the right direction. ![]() Go Ponies!!

Except that the D pressured the QB into that error. It was a forced error. You have to give some credit for that. ![]() Go Ponies!!

As one who was at the Marshall game, our defense was on the field on a hot day for most of the game. The offense was still not on track. The defense had played their guts out. When the refs called that fumble an incomplete pass, you could see the gas go right out of the defense. Marshall then scored and the game was essentially over. Our defense just didn't have it after that. Yes, those things happen, but after the fight they had put up in that game, it really eviscerated them.
I think the offense knows where the track is now, and with Demyron, I might even venture to say that we have at least 1 wheel of our locomotive a few inches to the left of the track.

yes our offense was a mess for the majority of the year... but i think everyone can i agree that we won some games we probably shouldn't have, and lost some games we shouldnt have. 5-6 was a great season for an up and coming team who only 2 years ago didn't win a game. 7-8 wins is not out of our reach. early on we have an easy schedule (exception of tt), and then we get into conference play where we have a chance to win everygame. hopefully by then whoever plays qb will have a firm grasp of the offense and some confidence with a few wins under his belt. on that thought, i might be wrong but does tt wb next year have any experience?! MAYBE NEXT YEAR THEIR QB WILL BE A BUST. as for the offense pb has said that smu will be going to a more of an under center offense so that we can use the "stable of ponies" we have at rb. not to say that we will completely take away the shotgun. look for johnnie fitzgerald to finally play a position for an entire season, without switching back and forth from offense to defense. with his power and speed we should have a solid fb!!

Instead of playing TCU, A&M, and BU in nonconf, y'all get Texas Tech, Arkansas State, North Texas, and one TBA, which will probably be a Div. 1-AA. So, instead of starting 1-2 like this year, there should be a real shot at 3-1 to enter conference.
Throw in Rice, Tulane, Houston, Marshall, and ECU and you are 8-1 going into the Tulsa game. Of course, Tulsa, UAB, and UTEP would be difficult, but if you're 8-1 going into that stretch of games, you could take one, if not two, of those. I see at least 7 wins for SMU next year: N. Texas Ark. St. Div. 1AA Rice Tulane and two from ECU, Marshall, Houston, UAB. 7-5 ain't shabby and 8-4 looks possible.
9 or 10 winsI don't see any SMU doesn't win at least 9 or 10 next year and SMU will definitely get a bowl berth.
Unfortunately, after SMU gets a bowl bid there's no way we'll be able to keep Bennett from a SEC or Big-12 gig. I can easily seeing a place like LSU or maybe Nebraska going after him.
