2006 Tulane Game

Postby Stallion » Thu Dec 15, 2005 5:28 pm

Its estimated that the Superdome will not be ready until November 1 next year and the informed sources on the Tulane Board seem to be suggesting that Tulane may errect temporary bleachers on an on campus field for its games. I'm assuming the SMU/Tulane game would be one that was affected. Man I was so looking forward to going to New Orleans for the SMU/Tulane games but now I dunno.

Yeah, I can imagine how you feel. Texas played Tulane in NOLA a few years ago and it was a helluva lot of fun. Hopefully much of the city's infrastructure will be restored by then so you can focus on the merriment and not the negative aspects of what the city has been through lately.

Jeez Stallion, it's New Orleans for godsake. I'd go if they were playing in Jackson Square, just to get to cruise the Quarter afterwards.

OK I'll share-the last time I went to New Orleans I stayed at the Sheraton-it was a last minute type of thing with my girlfriend and the rate was unusally low. You guessed it- the Sheraton was the international headquarters for a National Gay Convention-not that there is anything wrong with that. All conventioners wore a bright red ribbon so of course, I went and bought a bright blue ribbon-you know just so there wouldn't be any confusion that I was "true blue". Gosh it wasn't so bad except the Sheraton has a big drinking area in the forum where guys wearing red ribbons congreated for Happy Hour. We'd come back after Dinner and there would be about 1,000 drunk Gay Men looking for love. I was "All Over My Date" as you can imagine.
But it was the last incident that I hesitate to share with even all my "friends" on PonyFans.com. New Orleans can be kinda muggy-especially after taking that Riverboat down the Mississippi River. So my girlfriend and I decided to take a dip on their top floor swimming pool. I peeked around the corner and it was just me, my girlfriend and about 4 girls. We all got along and the girls were [deleted] about there not being enough "true blue" men like me. Well of couse, what happens? The entire governing board or something of the Convention decide to take their annual photo-shoot around the pool. So it was me in the pool and about 500 gay men milling around the swimming pool. Oh well, they were pretty cool-but the moral of that story is be wary of last minute discount hotel rates in New Orleans Hotels. New Orleans and San Diego are two of my favorites cities and I'm sure I'll likely go. And at least for that weekend I suggest all SMU Fans "Wear Blue"!!!!

I also have a gay themed NOLA story, must be the city. It was Mardi Gras and a few drunk friends and I were stumbling from bar to bar trying to find a reasonable cover charge where we could go in and deposit some used beer. We finally came across a place that has no cover and a one drink min. We thought that was a bargain since we needed a refill anyways. We walk in and it turns out there are chicks dancing on a stage and giving lap dances to guys at tables. We thought sweet, we're in a strip club. In the meantime, I head for the Men's room and instruct my friends to get me a beer. When I get back I look around and start to notice these chicks are ugly...real ugly. Then our waitress delivers our beers and we realize that we've made a HUGE mistake...yep, we're in a transvestite strip club. WE basically in unison realize this and yell "check please". As we're waiting for our check and chugging our beers, this 6'4 "sista" walks up to my friend and starts running his/her hands through his hair. I would have laughed if I wasn't so afraid that I was next. Long story short, our check came, we got the hell out of there and I was never happier to pay $10 bucks for a crappy beer.

Did they come to your tables and ask "Do you mind if we dance with your Dates?"

Must be a theme, last time I was there with the soon-to-be we stayed in a B&B on the other side of Esplanade, owned by, you guessed it, a gay couple (really nice guys--tour guides by day). Of course, every night we had to walk past the gay part and through the seedy side of the quarter to get home. Stopped for Chinese takeout one night--no pisser. Walked across into the open nightclub next door and straght into the men's room, only to find after I'm started that there's rainbow neon above my head and a guy next to me who, after I told him I was from Dallas, started espousing Oak Lawn to me...not that there's anything wrong with that....

What does it mean that I'd do it again in a heartbeat???

Go and enjoy this Magnolia League showdown...

...And on the TCU board they asked themselves who their greatest rivals are and the answers: SMU and Baylor...

...Damn I'm good....The West would make for great theater....or in the case of a Magnolia League: 'theatre'.

New Orleans is where I witnessed a robber being shot down in the middle of the street by a liquor store owner. The robber had held up the owner and was running down the street. The owner ran out with his .44 in hand, shouted for the guy to 'Stop!' - he didn't - and he shot him in the back. Dead. The cops showed up and, after the usual questions, the dead guy was carted off by the M.E. and the liquor store owner went back to his store.

Could shooting a fleeing robber in the back who was no longer on the liquor store property be a case of manslaughter?

The liquor store owner was no longer in any danger of death or bodily harm so the fatal shooting was not in self-defense.

Comments?
The New Orleans Police Department wasn't exactly a 'by the book' operation. This incident happened in the early 70s.

Here in DC we have a number of bars that cater to those with alternative lifestyles, but they tend to be more or less tolerant of those with non-alternative lifestyles. During my younger single days, my date wanted to go to a certain restaurant that she heard served great food. We went. When I saw guys holding hands and kissing, I got a little nervous. But they left us alone and the food was pretty good and we left. My secretary recently came in with a black eye. It seems she stumbled into a gay bar here and wasn't very accomodating to the large bull lesbian hitting on her. She answered that she didn't date (fill in your favorite lesbian synonym here). And a cat fight ensued. So, Stallion, be glad that the women in the pool weren't eyeing your girlfriend and did you get into the photo shoot?

That's kind of interesting, since I was always under the impression that TCU and its fans didn't consider us a rival, and that they took great joy in the fact that we consider them a rival. Maybe 21-10 had something to do with the change in their thought process.

And as for the Tulane game, I think bleachers on a field at their campus might be even better than the SuperDome, which is like watching a game in the Grand Canyon. Could be a very cool game-day atmosphere (in fact, having been to Tulane a few times, I'm sure it will be.)
