Today's Star-Telegram has a full page on the history of the Bluebonnet
Bowl since the Froggies will soon be playing there. The story picked the top five games in Bluebonnet Bowl history. #1 was the Mustangs 28-27 win over Oklahoma in the 1968 game. Ponies were led by the great Chuck Hixson, Jerry Levias, Mike Richardson, and many other wonderful players.

Tough to imagine a more exciting game than that one was. As I mentioned once before, I was on the 5 or 10 yard line at the end OK tried the last second field goal. I could not tell if was good or not and saw a group of people in the end zone going crazy. I dejectedly thought they were OU fans but then realized they were SMU fans.

For some strange reason, one of the few universities that REFUSE to use their school colors: Harvard Crimson & Yale Blue.

No. I was a freshman that year and freshman were not eligible to play even if I were prepared to. I did get to captain the freshman team that beat UT with Jim Bertleson, et al. I then redshirted and was career ending injured begining of 2-a-days my redshirt sophmore year. I then coached the redshirts my final 2 years and got my well loved education. But, that said, I get better every year that passes. There are several women across the country that believe I was 5th place in Heisman voting in 1971. Could not really check that in my "available" days. They always felt bad that I was just short of being invited to New York for the ceremony. Ahhhhhh the memories.
PS: Randy Allen of HP coaching fame ran back a punt over 70 yards in that UT game to seal the win.

Dang, I been telling all my Arkie buds that you were 4th in the voting that year. You should hear them complain about Broyles letting another great Arkansas athlete get away.

Fourth could have put me in NY for the ceremony so I had to stay away from that. Broyles brought me in for a visit. Sat me down in his castle of an office and politely told me I was too small for them but he would reconsider if he did not get who he wanted. What an [deleted]. I decided to prove him wrong. I guess the fact I got hurt and could not continue proved him right. For what is was worth though, I had already crossed Arkansas off because I wanted the education and diploma that SMU offered.

You are being way too honest. The Judge may be proud of you but it sure takes the fun out of egging the Arkie crowd. I was at that 68 Blue Bonnet game as well. And it sounds like I was sitting very close to the area you were located, mrydel. That was one heck of an exciting game.

Continuing memories from that game, I was obviously on Christmas break (we could call it that at that time), and I had grown a beard. After the game I went up to my linebacker coach, Ray Utley (a wonderful, yet fearsome man) and congratulated him. He was ecstatic, jumping up and down, hugged me and was screaming how great it was. All of a sudden he stopped, his face turned stern and he said in a very authoritative tone, "shave it off!". After the drive back to Dallas that night, I shaved it off before bed. Coach Utley had that type of feared, yet earned respect about him.
