Nevada's Pistol Offense

Postby Stallion » Sat Dec 24, 2005 11:12 pm

anybody watching the Hawaii Bowl? Nevada uses an interesting formation called the Pistol in which the QB is lined up in a short shotgun (4 yards back) but their TB is placed directly behind him about 3 yards back instead of offset. It would appear to be an offense which might fit DeMyron Martin's skills by getting him more of an I-formation look in which he could develop more speed to the line and see his holes. The offset formation is more of a delayed running game formation which effectively cuts the offensive holes in half. Anyway it might be worth a look. Interesting, I've never been an offset formation fan especially for a big strong RB of the Martin, Dickerson or Peterson mold.

The Result: Nevada had 638 yards with TWO RBs over about 150 each and averaging about 8 yards per carry. Interesting. Very Interesting.

well Stallion for once I agree w/ you on this topic and I will tell you why..

Martin would benefit from this type of formation because it would get him running downhill and if you get him running downhill he is guaranteed 3 yds every time he touches the ball and that is before he breaks his usuall one or two tackles..
Why is it important to get him running downhill? Speed and power.. I cannot count how many times this year announcers questioned why OU had peterson lined up by the Bomar in the shotgun b/c when he would get the ball he would start running east and west immediately instead of N and South where he is deadly.. Is Martin as deadly as Peterson, NO, but he would be deadly enough to compete w/ UCF's RB as 1st team all conference or possilby even O player of the year ...

But this offense is not something that burns will probably bring up b/c Willis is an even better runner than Romo was and I have not watched much of nevada adn the Pistol being run but I would think it would be hard to run the zone option out of it.

But it would be a good formation to add.. that is for damn sure.. it is obviously working..
