CONROE - A Texas Christian University football player died early today after he was shot in his sport utility vehicle at an apartment complex, police said.
Kasey Christopher Davis, 20, was shot in the chest about 12:30 a.m., after he parked his Chevrolet Suburban in the parking lot of the Forest Creek Apartments in the 2200 block of Montgomery Park Boulevard, police said.
Davis was taken to Conroe Regional Medical Center, where he died at 1:52 a.m., police said.
Police arrested a suspect, 40-year-old Jeffrey Clay Lasiter, about a mile from the crime scene. He is in the Montgomery County Jail on murder charges, police said.
Witnesses' description of Lasiter's vehicle helped police locate him about three minutes after they responded to the 911 call, said Conroe police spokesman Sgt. Bob Berry.
Lasiter was pulled over for a traffic stop in the 1300 block of West Davis Street.
Police discovered a rifle, in full view, on the front seat of Lasiter's car, Berry said. Lasiter was questioned and taken into custody, he said.
Davis, a Conroe native, was home visiting on Christmas break and to play a football game. He was visiting friends at the apartment complex when the shooting occurred, Berry said.
Davis, a redshirt freshman, played in two games this season for the Horned Frogs. TCU beat Iowa State in the EV1.net Houston Bowl on New Year's Eve at Reliant Stadium.
"TCU is very saddened to learn of this tragic occurrence," TCU coach Gary Patterson said in a statement. "Kasey was a team player and had a great future at TCU. He will be greatly missed. Our hearts and minds are with his family during this difficult time."
Davis, an arts and sciences major, graduated from Conroe High School, where he was an accomplished football player. He was a first team all-district and all-county punter and second team all-county and honorable mention all-district placekicker. He also played in the national All-Star Bowl, said the TCU Web site.
Investigators do not have a motive in the shooting. The investigation is ongoing, Berry said.
