Texas Kneeded Help To Win

Postby PlanoStang » Thu Jan 05, 2006 1:05 pm

What game were the officials in the replay booth watching when Vince
pitched out to Young for UT's first TD after his knee touched? Haven't
found any mention of it yet in the Austin/Dallas Morning News Rose Bowl
section.

They mentioned during the game that the replay booth video monitors had glitch and weren't working right for the first half.

Really though to say that a play in the 2nd quarter made all the difference is wrong. Still would have been UT's ball inside the 20.

Late in the game Dan Fouts said there had been technical difficulties in the booth that made the review replay unavailable. I guess the Greek god of football is named Bevo.

What Dan Fouts' meant to say was after they heard all the USC boos
after the scoreboard replay, the replay refs were still too lazy to walk
down the hall to the ABC booth, and watch it on ABC's monitor.

It is kind of like "Its a Wonderful Life". What would have happened had they done the replay. Would UT have scored a TD? A FG? Would they have missed the extra point if not hurrying to keep a replay from occuring and if not how would that one point played differently into strategy? Calls like that happen all the time and I am sure there were some missed that would have favored USC. I have no love for UT but all I wanted last night was to witness a great game and I got my wish. I only wish they had played the 1st half with the more wide open play that there was in the 2nd. During the 2nd half it seemed as if the field was only 50 or 60 yards long they were both chewing up such big hunks of yardage so fast. Great game.

Replay isn't perfect. We may have gone bowling had the 'replay' been available to our beloved Mustangs at Marshall. Instead, the 'ruling on the field' precluded review. USC just had a similar situation. It happens. Had the SC running back held the ball instead of tossing it into oblivion after a 50 yard play, perhaps the score is different. Had SC made one of two 4th down conversions is may be a different game. A whole lot of ifs which goes with most close games. Bottom line, UT won a National Championship the old fashion way, they earned it.

I do wish that UT had scored on a more legitimate play than that, but it's not their job to ask for replay on their miscues - it's the other teams'. It's not VY's job to ask the ref to review the play. Anyway, it's a moot point. With as easily as USC's defense was letting Texas move down the field on that drive, I'm pretty sure they would have scored anyway.

Apparently the CUSA refs hadn't learned yet in the Marshall game to call something a fumble first and let replay straighten it out than to call it incomplete and therefore no replay is allowed. The first backward forward pass in history. What a bunch of clowns.

Well at least the C-USA admitted the mistake, and apologized to us
afterwards.

The Big 10 officiating crew so far claims an equipment malfunction, but
that's probably just a CYA move.

After all those USC boos they should've buzzed the on field officials to
stop play, and check the ABC replays in the nearest available suite if
they REALLY had a malfunction.

After all. this is the NCAA BULL CR*P SERIES NATIONAL
CHAMPIONSHIP :!:

BE REALISTIC. They were driving at WILL on that Drive...there's little doubt they would have scored ANYWAY with a First and goal from the 8.

Everybody seems to already forget that had TX not fumbled the opening punt, they probably would have been up 7-0 instead of USC being up 7-0

Recall that USC didn't score another TD in the first half. As well, UT scored 3 times plus had a fumble as well.

At the time, the Reggie pitch could have put USC over the top, but he was being tackled at the 20 anyway. But that argument forgets the first TX fumble.

I do think #25's non-catch and non-fumble was in fact a catch/fumble and could have sealed the game for them.

But the critical error was the home field officials, while trying to help USC with the clock, had the game clock continue TWICE when UT clearly went out of bounds ( a) down by 12, at around 7 minutes, went out of bounds and another 40-50 seconds ran off the clock b) down by 5, at around 2:10 minutes, guy goes out of bounds, trying to go out of bounds, and the clock still rolls).

Those precious seconds would have helped USC.

one other thing, the USC lateral - pass by the WR in the 3rd quarter should have been a 10 yard penalty and loss of down...no review.

I watched the bogus kneel-down touchdown on TiVo about 15 times when i got home and that was definitely a forward lateral as well. TU should have had the ball on about the 15 or 20 after that play... not a free 6 points.

While we are playing this game, what about UT linebacker Drew Kelson (#4)'s interception?

Calls went both ways...always have...always will.
