You knew this was coming

Today's Dallas Morning news had a little SMU chatter in The Morning Line from the great Steve Davis:

Knowing coach, market pays off

Former St. John's and New Mexico basketball coach Fran Fraschilla has moved into the area and now lives in a home handed off by former SMU football coach Mike Cavan.

Fraschilla resigned from New Mexico in March. His wife, who is from the area, was house hunting in the Park Cities during the summer. As she drove around, she happened to see Cavan in the front yard of his house near SMU.

She recognized Cavan and stopped to chat. Aware that things didn't work out at SMU, she asked if he was selling.

He was. And since the Fraschillas were buying, he was able to sell the property without ever putting it on the market.

Fran Fraschilla couldn't make a go of it at New Mexico, where current Baylor (and former SMU) coach Dave Bliss inflated the expectations by going to seven NCAA Tournaments in nine years. ... Cavan is now a fund-raiser in Georgia's athletic department. ... Historically, every time Eric Dickerson shows at Ford Stadium, the Mustangs get whupped. He was there Saturday (for the 1982 team reunion) as SMU finished on the wrong side of a shellacking. And Dickerson was there two years back (for his jersey retirement) when TCU waylaid the Mustangs, 62-7. (OK, that's just twice. But if you're SMU, you really can't take any chances that this is a legitimate trend.) ...

•

Things overheard Saturday as SMU darn near set its football field on fire. (A pre-game fireworks show got crazy and set several grass fires on the hill beyond Ford Stadium's South end zone.)

"It's all part of the show. When the fires burn down, the black spots are gonna spell out 'Bennett!' "

"Uh, yeah, Coach Bennett, we like to set something on fire at every game."

"Would the big brain behind the fireworks promotion please see AD Jim Copeland first thing Monday morning."

--------------------

(There was some other stuff in it, too, but it wasn't SMU-related, so it's not important)
"It's 106 miles to Chicago, we've got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark and we're wearing sunglasses."
...
"Hit it."

With Fraschilla living in SMU's back yard, does that mean Dement is on the hot seat? Can't be comfortable to have a guy like that living down the street.
