I certainly hope he at least gets a tryout. He's got a strong enough leg. My only concern is that teams will look at his numbers and not think he kicked enough, rather than his actual ability.

I would say his best chance is to get a tryout as sort of a "favor" to someone on the SMU coaching staff. Once they see him boot the ball he will catch on somewhere. Heck, the Cowboys would be foolish not to give him at least a shot.

He will get some tryouts and probably make a team somewhere. I agree that the Cowboys would be foulish not to give him a look.

This kid is an exceptional kicker and I think he will get a chance to tryout with a club. I have heard that he can kick the ball as far with his right foot as his left foot!

I understand the need for a switch hitter in baseball, but is there any value to a switch kicker?

No. Kicking a football is like a golf swing -- you want to repeat the motion as close to perfectly as possible. The only use for a kicker who can use either foot is when you are doing a surprise onside kick. SMU did it years ago, when converted soccer player Cody Schroeder handled kickoffs. The Ponies lined up for an onside kick, and the opponent (I forget who SMU played that day) lined up on one side. Schroeder ran up to the ball, and then pivoted and used his left foot, kicking the ball to the empty side of the field, recovering the ball himself. Very few coaches would call a risky play like that, so you can assume that if McMurtray gets a look somewhere, he'll be kicking lefty only.

No NFL teams use draft picks anymore on kickers. So he might get a tryout and might end up at NFL Europe for a season. Remember, there are already a number of teams with kickers and most of them are satisfied with them. The only reason they cut kickers are for cap space. That said, John Hall who was a great kicker may be on the way out in Washington. He is one of the more highly paid kickers. His injury last season was not fully healed by the playoffs and he was kicking short all season. Add to that the shank in the last quarter against the Seahawks and Gibbs may want to see some competition.

He will definitely be in the NFL next year. Just look at his clutch kicks!

On a related note, I'm starting to get nervous since some of our recruits over the past year or so are good enough we may not be able to keep them for the full four years of eligibility.

I hope Bennett isn't making the team so good it leads to other problems we haven't experienced like having our player men head to the NFL early.

 say what? We finished the year on a positive note, but we aren't there yet. Hopefully we get there, but we DEFINITELY aren't there yet.
The donkey's name is Kiki.

On a side note, anybody need a patent attorney?

Being a sunshiner I just have to applaud "DanFreibergerForHeisman" for perhaps the single most sunshining quote I have read on this board. We are a long way from worrying about our kids leaving early for the NFL but I love the enthusiasm.

As for the topic of this thread, I am sure he will at least get a look from the Cowboys. They need a new kicker and here he is a hometown (in terms of college) boy.
