A little help pleaseHelp! I am working on my sermon for this Sunday and I need some help. Part of my sermon has to do with my favorite team of all time, the guys who played the first year following probation. I am having trouble remembering any names past Mike Romo. Can anyone give me some help with the names of several of these SMU heroes?
Thanks!
The guy who actually came back to SMU from before the death penalty was Mitchell Glieber, I think. Mike Bowen also transferred in that first year. And Jason Wolf set some crazy receiving records in Run n Shoot offense. On defense, I remeber Uzo Okeke just becasue of his name. Was Cary Brabham on that first team? He may have been our first post-DP player in the NFL.
I'd like a copy of that sermon for sure.
BRING BACK THE GLORY DAYS OF SMU FOOTBALL!!!
For some strange reason, one of the few universities that REFUSE to use their school colors: Harvard Crimson & Yale Blue.
Kevin Love and Rongea Hill were the RBs. Andy Bergfeld was another of the receivers. Chris Collins was a LB. Bill Keilly (sp?) was another LB. Don't remember many of the others. One of the biggest disappointments of my 4 years at SMU was watching the kicker choke on a chip shot against Tulane that would have won the game and ensured a winning season that year - the season in which the true freshmen from the 89 team were seniors and avenged the UH 95-21 beating. I seem to recall we also beat TCU and Arkansas that season for some very rare post DP SWC wins. What could have been had we had Ford built or funded by then . . .
Terry: I'm sure a quick call to the AD's office on Friday might be of help, too...then again, maybe not.

Chad Patton didn't get there until 1990, or maybe it was 1991.
WR Mike Bowen, who caught the winning touchdown in the "Miracle on Mockingbird" also came back. He transferred to Georgia when we lost football, and came home to finish his degree. Also, OL Tre Giller transferred in that year from Oklahoma before going on to a tryout with the Chicago Bears. Here are the guys I remember: QBs: Mike Romo, Casey Clyce RBs: Jason Wolf, Rongea Hill, Kevin Love, Stuart Ison WRs: Bowen, Glieber, Andy Bergfeld, Greg Ballard, Simeon Knight, Korey Beard TEs: Greg Hill OLs: Giller, Oscar Rosales, Matt Wisenbaker, Matt Hart, Tom Huemiller, Joe Wells, Kyle Carroll, Tre Cowan, Curtis Eldridge DLs: Kenny "Sugar" Rea, Geoff King, Uzo Okeke LBs: Bill Kiely, Jason Bednarz, Omar Thompson, Chris Collins, Greg Gardner, Darren Harrington, Mike Henderson, Drew Randall DBs: Marcello Simmons, Marcus Malonson, Cary Brabham, Mark Martinez Ks: Russell Anderson, Matt Lomenick (spelling?) That's all I can remember. Although the fact that I can name that many, is a strong indicator that I need therapy. (And the 1989 bunch is my favorite team, too.)
If you need anything else, the offer is still good. I also still have the program from the Texas game that year and a VHS tape of that Texas game. The one and only Texas game in Ownby Stadium.
I doubt that is true except for games post 1948. SMU use to play all their home games in Ownby prior to moving into the Cotton Bowl to acommadate the crowds wanting to watch Doak Walker.
