Copeland

Postby Mexmustang » Sun Jan 22, 2006 11:43 am

Once again Jim Copeland amazes me! In the past three weeks he discusses his retirement, gives Coach Bennett a raise and extension and now anounces he is not a candiate for the job at William and Mary.

My take on this, Copeland would rather take a "buyout" from SMU and not work, than take a similar salary at W&M and have to work! I wish Coach Bennett all the best and want him to stay, but the timing of the extension was more for the validation of Copeland's claim of "success" than keeping Phil or helping solidify our recruiting. Finally, why make any comment on W&M at all? Was it big-time news that needed comment?

Copeland's true colors are there in print--it was something to pursue because it was close to "home"! Well fella, if Dallas and SMU aren't your home by now LEAVE!

Did you guys see the Hot Sports Opinion by former SMU Mustang Club President Charles Terrell in the Dallas Morning News?

I thought that's what he's already doing, taking our money and not working. I chose the wrong career track, I should be an ex-athlete they have the easiest jobs in America.

Saw the letter - was not needed.

I liked the extension on Bennett - if you can't see the direction fo this program is on the upswing then you are not watching. And that closed in glass section at the stadium represents what is wrong with SMU athletics - we need to open up those windows and let a little fresh air in up there.

I do agree copeland is not our oong term answer - if he wants to go he should go.

It was the poor timing of Coach Bennett's raise...why not at the end of season when it could have boosted both his esteem and benefited our recruiting? Or wait until next year, then double the raise?

I will be very depressed, if Jim does not step down in May! We need to bombard Turner with e-mails, letters and calls!

Lets face it, Big Jim has been on "auto-pilot" for years. I would agree he is looking for a kush retirement package and I betcha he moves out of Dallas as soon as he can.

Hopefully Scott Secules will be able to make the transition to the next regime. Scott loves SMU and would help bridge the gap from the Copeland era into the new era.

We need someone that views Dallas as "home". Someone that wants to live and breathe SMU for the rest of their life. Somene that loves SMU and Dallas. We all know Big Jim won't stay in Dallas once his paycheck at SMU ends. In my opinion Copeland always would have preferred being else-where.

When we hire Big Jim's replacement we need to really get someone that is much more energetic and is relentless in moving the program forward. The replacement hire will be the most important post death penalty decision the program has faced. It is critical we make the right choice.

Secules is clearly the #1 candidate. As for Copeland, he is a strange one. Kinda like 6-7 years ago when he kept talking about how he was a candidate for N.C. State, and he wasn't even interviewed. He is a self-promoter, but what non-alum at SMU wouldn't be. Georgia Tech is looking for an A.D. (although I bet on Curry to be named).

No, there is no "#1 candidate." Copeland has neither resigned nor retired, and until he does, or at least announces his intention to do so, no search committee will even be formed. Secules might well be on the minds of some of the heavy hitters who help make these decisions, but to suggest there already is a top candidate established before what had BETTER be a national search is conducted is shortsighted, in my opinion.

Or did you mean Secules is your #1 choice for the job?

I wonder what other SMU personnel might be interested? Assistant AD Carlton Cooper? Or what about a coach? Schellas Hyndman, I would think, is interested only in coaching, and I'm not sure who else going take a shot at the job.

Wanna get some inside into the hiring selection and status of a new AD? Call Bill Funk @ Korn Ferry in Dallas if he is still the Managing Partner. He would know.

No internal promotions. We need a completely new perspective on things.
