Craig James' son committed...to Texas Tech today.
because he can play baseball.
forget him. and i forgot craig long ago. Loved seeing him put his hook'em horns sign up wearing his SMU SWC Champ ring. what a JOKE. i couldn't give two cosby kids about craig james' son or where his third rate tight end skills go. Ok this is getting ridiculous...I agree with Dutch on THIS ONE POST by him totally
I understand why SMU does not have baseball and wish it were diffferent, although I don't expect to see it return. There have been several potential football recruits the last few years who might have opted for SMU had baseball been part of the sports program.
Though many will differ, I do think that legacies like a James ought to be offered. The blood lines are good enough to take a chance and hope for development. I wish good fortune to the James kid same as I hope the rest of Drew Weatherford's career builds on the the first year.
If we had unlimited scholarships, I would offer him too, but we don't. You people overrate publicity. A three paragraph story on page six of the sports section one day is not worth a scholarship. Do you think anyone would really care if Craig James' son went to SMU?
Why didn't Tech give him a BASEBALL offer? Boy.......that dumb ole' Texas Tech, and that top 25 football team. I don't know how they go to bowl games year after year, giving out scholorships to guy's that "can't play"! Craig James gives SMU X number of mentions on NATIONAL TV every year. Without question, that number goes up with his flesh and blood at his alma mater! Now Tech will be getting those free spots on ESPN! Well, mabey not free........but at the most, it cost them a scholorship.

I care. Developing a history of legacies can be very important down the road, just as the reverse is and has been true. I think we should have offereed, and am confident that he would not have come due to our lack of a baseball team. Worst case is we end up with a player who would rank with others we have on the team.
Are you kidding? It is hard for me to believe that you are not joking around for shock value. His signing would have gotten SMU as much publicity as Kindle (not deserved, but it would have). Willis to slot receiver!
It isn't like James' son chose the better academic school...he chose the inferior one. Then again, SMU is somewhat logjamed at WR/TE and Texas Tech is a much better passing offense and is a more elite football program at the moment.
I miss Troy Matthews.
Kindle, the kid going to Texas? You're nuts. It would have gotten a mention, like Ryan Wolcott did a few years ago, but that's it. The story only would come up if he came to SMU and PLAYED and DID WELL.
To be honest, I rarely agree with 2112's rants, but I do agree that the number of times Craig James mentioned SMU on national television would have gone up with his son here. I don't know exactly how Craig feels about the time spent here, although it does seem he holds a place in his heart for the school, since he makes the occasional cameo (i.e. the Conference USA press conference, etc.) But stick his son on the team -- whether or not he can play -- and suddenly Dad becomes a national, on-air cheerleader.
The publicity, if it came about, would have been nice, but this goes much deeper than this. We need to develop a tradition of legacy. Would anyone here have been upset if Shanderick's brother had come here? There have been many instances in the recent past ( I am too old to recall them all but they were discussed here) where we were not even considered by a brother, son, cousin, nephew, whatever. We will not get them all, and if they are real good, I am sure we offer them. But we need to establish the thought that a legacy is SUPPOSED to come here. It should be their first expectation from cradle that they are going to SMU. If we do not even offer a child of one of our better performers who put us on the map during an period of reconstruction, what are future generations to believe. Recruiting does not just occur a few months a year. It is ongoing and cumulative. Burley is here due to legacy. This is the type of signing that should be expected rather than sweated.
We could offer a woman a scholarship. That would get us even more publicity. Or a dwarf. Or even a quadraplegic. That would get us a front page story on the Lifestyles section, maybe even a segment on Oprah. It would be awesome- the I-A feel good story of the year. The chicks on the View would cry. Maybe even get a Lifetime movie deal; Ted McGinley with a fake 'stache could play Phil Bennett. Fact is the coaches had little interest in the kid. Maybe they were wrong; time will tell. But if I were a coach, I am not offering a scholarship to a kid that I don't think can play. Period.
Nice. Good to know racism is accepted around here. ![]() Official Cult of Chris Phillips Member
