from today's DMN sportssay blog entry byt Watkins:
Bumped into SMU quarterback Chris Phillips outside the weight room on Wednesday night. There are numerous rumors that the former Bishop Lynch star was going to transfer. Phillips said that's not the case. Offensive coordinator Rusty Burns asked Phillips to change positions. The SMU coaches are thinking of making Phillips a slash type of player: A running back/wide receiver/tight end/quarterback.
"The coaches say I have great hands," he said. "I'm still thinking about it."

they don't want him to play QB because he will likely embarrass the hell out of the coaching staff by outplaying his competition once again.

I think the most encouraging part of that entry was the opening - "SMU quarterback Chris Phillips".
I like the sound of that.

Interesting.
I wish we could get an actual answer on his shoulder from him.
He seemed liked he could get the job done.

we are so solid at QB with all these 6-1 QBs who made all district in high school we won't need him at QB. I hear one guy even threw for 800 yards in JUCO and almost hit on 47% of his passes-not quite 46.3%. WHAT we REALLY NEED is one more TE!!!!!!! Plus every single QB on our roster has grown 2 inches since high school so all these guys should be 6-3 or 6-4 by next fall.

Agreed. It seems so obvious that he is a hell of an athlete and can/would win games for us at the QB. So obvious that you have to believe that ANY coach could recognize this. I have to think his shoulder is the problem when even my wife can see his potential at qb.
Wish Watkins would ask how his shoulder is next time he bumps into him.

Generally, I was fine with the QB decisions regarding Phillips last year. I wasn't going to fault the decision not to play him over two other QBs that started multiple juco games and some games at SMU. But hey, I was about the only one saying Romo should start from the beginning of the season. I did think the idea of playing Willis as a backup was dumb.
Phillips absolutely deserves a shot in Spring ball at QB. He's the only one with game experience. That being said, you have to get him on the field, regardless. And a slash-type player should have been tried last season.

This is the goofiest situation ever and gets stranger all the time. If there are rumors about Phillips transfering, and if he is still 'thinking about' the position change that all tells me that the kid still thinks he can play quarterback. If he didn't believe he was still a qb, what is there to think about? Now, maybe he is deluding himself and the coaches really know best, but what it tells me is that the shoulder injury is marginal and he can still play. Sure would like to see him have a chance on the field and in a game situation again. We dont have any stellar options anyway.

OMG.. let it go.
What we obtain too cheap.. we esteem too lightly. It is persistence alone that gives everything its value.

Chris is a great athlete, I think he can do it...In fact he dunked on one of my good friends in high school when my team was playing Bishop Lynch.
I miss Troy Matthews.

And if he is "thinking about" the proposed position change, then he must also still be "thinking about" a transfer if he decides against the position change. I predicted a year ago he'd likely transfer as a result of his treatment, and now it looks like it may happen.

If he were looking to transfer, he likely would have done it by now. He's got Spring ball here. He could transfer to a I-AA school, but they wouldn't let him jump in play QB over the summer. So he would have 1 season to work his way in and one season to play. He could transfer to a I-A school, but he would have to sit out a year and he would only have one year to play. If he wanted to transfer, he should have done it at the break so he could have spring practice at his new school. Circumstances would suggest a transfer is unlikely at this point.

You are reading something into this that was not there and not reading what was there. He said that the rumor that he was transfering was not the case. Period.

Well then apparently he is "thinking about" not doing what the coaches have asked him to do, which is a sure way to ride the pine for the rest of his career. Is that what you think he meant?
