Just wanted to throw a few names out their see who may be
starting in the DB next season. No doubt Joe sturdivant is solid
at stong safety but what about the other 3 spots. How about David Haynes,
Bryan McCann, and maybe Randall Goode or Victor Mckinde.
Lindley and Brandon jones also bring experience .Looks like a lot of speed for the most part.

...also brandon jones, wont be with the team next year. for that matter he wont be at smu. also the team is signing 2 corners and not any safteys. so that leaves it up to Joe sturdivant, blackmon, goode, hudman, sloan, and piro if he recoverws from his acl surgery. thats for safteys. the starting corners will probably haynes and lindley.

Bryan McCann is an incoming freshman who is expected to start out at CB, but has experience at many positions.

No we don't. There's attrition everywhere.

I would expect that Lindley, Haynes and Goode would be the starters going into spring?

We don't have a lot of experience back there, but we sure have an awful lot of speed.

I would expect McCann to be redshirted. He was injured a lot of his senior year, correct? Plus we have a lot of quality in the secondary, just not a lot of experience.

That's got to be a position that might have more competition than any other in spring ball. We are thin, experience-wise, but I can't remember a time when we had the speed and athleticism and depth that we have now, even if the curious report about Jones' departure proves to be true. Lindley, Haynes, Goode, Makinde, L. Johnson, Piro, Settle, Sloan -- that's an inexperienced group, but they'd better be ready to learn on the fly. With the improvement shown by the defensive line this year, you've got to think many teams (and I think it's safe to include Texas Tech in the opener) will go after us through the air until we prove we can stop some teams.

A relentless pass rush wouldn't hurt.

If it is true that Jones is gone, that means we lose 3 0f 4 starters in the secondary.
2 starting linebackers.
and 1 DE when you count Don Stansbury. ouch!

2 starting OL.
1st and second string QB's.
one part time WR starter in Chris Foster.
and both of our kickers.

our young guy's better be able to play........and quick!

I agree, especially at quarterback and in the secondary. I have a friend who keeps asking "is this year that SMU gets a winning record/bowl bid, etc.?" I always say that while the overall talent and depth continue to grow, the question can't be answered until we know what we've got at quarterback and in the secondary. Of course, I (like all PonyFans) hope 2006 IS the year.

Help, please.

Jones is still on the roster of smumustangs.com as of 1/31/06.

STANG: What do you know that the team doesn't know?
