Wheels are in Motion - put up or shut up

Postby PhirePhilBennett » Fri Feb 03, 2006 10:43 am

-HS Recruiting Camps on SMU Campus in 2006 and beyond

-Tom Laundry Classic gets 4 good teams on campus every year

-2007 SLC plays national televised game at Ford

----

Now, win 8+ games, regardless of the "1aa's", and we can say "We've turned the corner" and the recruits will follow.

Don't win, and they won't. It's as simple as that.

"This could be the most important [season, ever,] for SMU" - Mike Cavan (posthumously)

I hate to post here because my name on a post seems to kill a thread. But here's my 2 cents.

Start a Committtee of 100 really committed men and women.
Make SMU Dallas' HOME TEAM.
Use billboards and advertising.
Send players and cheerleaders to businesses for promotions.
Sell 2 for 1 coupon books for football and basketball games through company stores, etc.
Somehow get to a bowl game and win.
Have more wins than losses year after year.
Don't accept anything short of excellence.
Make it your goal to become a BCS member school, whatever it takes.
Change conferences if necessary to meet your goals.

Does this sound like TCU's formula? That proves it works.

Hopefully the new AD whoever it will be, will follow this plans to a T especially the get to a Bowl game and win.

However, focusing on the next two years, forget the BCS and conference changing stuff. Pretty much, just give Dallas a winner and the support will be there. As Aikman said, "Dallas doesn't like football, they like winners".

The TCU Formula was:
1. Hire Proven Division 1A Football Coach
2. Hire Proven Division 1A Basketball Coach
3. Lower Academic standards to legal but NCAA Minimum Standards-including plenty of JUCOs, Division 1A Transfers and late qualifiers
4. Broad range of curiculm that will allow them to sustain very high graduation rates
5. Fund their athletic program at the Top of Non-BCS schools
6. Seek to distinguish and disassociate itself from schools that do not share a desire to compete at the Highest level of Division 1A-see SMU, Rice and Tulane

TCU 6 SMU 0

#6. The jury is still out. Let's see how they do after a losing season in the MWC and whether they could EVER come back.

Neil Dougherty has the Froggy High hoops program running along smoothly, don't you think?

And you know the desire because .... you were in meetings at those schools wth high-ranking officials and big-bucks alums? As someone said here yesterday or the day before, just because it hasn't worked yet doesn't mean those schools don't want to win. Each has extenuating circumstances, I'm sure, and each is trying to work past them.

Order is a little off. AD came first; BBall coach came second (Tubbs).

Wheels in motion- -a ways to go.

It should be noted for our sports programs to acheive more success our overall curriculum has to be improved. Copeland has made some improvements but there is still a ways to go.

From my perspective I saw all of the positive things that TCU was doing to improve their program. Stallion saw all of the negative things. It's just a difference in each of our outlooks on life. You choose your own path.

I believe I'd rather have an 11-1 record than a 5-6 record, even if that 1 was a loss to TCU.

You are referring to Billy Tubbs I take it. I don't think he had a losing season at TCU and he consistently beat us even when we were at our best.

Actually I was refurring to the current coach Neil Daugherty. 42-50 at TCU coming into this year 5-17 this year, giving a total of 47-67 a .410 winning percentage, yes Tubbs had a good run with TCU, but why bring in Daugherty then if they were on the way to the top?
