Turner must apologize to Blackistone

Postby Hoop Fan » Sat Feb 04, 2006 6:10 pm

thats right, I said Turner must apologize to Blackistone. Our prez started a [deleted] match with the DMN yesterday during the press conference and Blackistone threw a haymaker right back at SMU this morning.

Whatever recruiting progress Bennett was due for next year after the progress of a 5-6 season was probably wiped out by that article. Tubbs will be hurt even worse with the future local stars.

If Secules is our guy, he or somebody else needs to figure out how to offset this damage and establish a better relationship with the local paper. Maybe SMU needs to buy alot of stock in Belo via the endowment and have some influence to exert.

I guess sometimes you shouldn't speak truth to power. It was gratifying to read Pres. Turner's comments, but I--of all people--understand your point. I think these articles destroy our ability to recruit. Tomorrow the headline will probably be, "UT is the Greatest School Ever." They will also probably profile the stupid Red River Classic ten months early.

The DMN pisses on SMU any chance it gets just like the local media - we're either totally ignored, they just laugh at us, compare SMU to TCU, or make deragatory comments.....why does the media hate SMU?

Some of his comments were harsh and stupid (like this is where SMU belongs) but I think you are being a little dramatic...

I, for one, am glad to see Turner growing a pair and showing a little spine. The DMN will [deleted] on us no matter what, so I saw we embrace our snobby stereotype and tell the DMN to f-off.

Well. whatever the hell Turner said, it had nothing to do with causing Blackistone attack on SMU today.

Last week he called the Cotton Bowl 'The House that SMU Wrecked'. So. who's to blame for that crap??

why apologize? The article was factual. Even the comment that the only way we could compete with the big boys was to cheat. The FACT was that everyone was cheating so we sure as heck weren't going to compete with them by running the program the way we do now.

For those of you old enough to know him, this is like the "Joe Pepitone" story. Joe was a "barely better than average" NY Yankee 1st baseman during a time when the Yankees were cellar dwellers. He was always saying things to make people dislike him, but as Joe said: "love me or hate me...as long as you recognize me...that's how I make $$$"

Same thing here. If the DMN writes negative stuff about SMU every day, it's better than not writing anything at all. I just hope enough people in the SMU community are offended enough to do something about it.

I don't this we Mr. Blackistone is the problem. How would you like to have to cover some of our teams over the past years. He is probably as frustrated with his beat as we are about our teams. Try the editors, not the poor guy trying to get his work recognized.

Kevin Blackistone is a columnist, not a beat writer. I've seen him at an SMU event maybe once or twice a year. He, like the rest of the columnists, rotate from one event and/or team to another, depending on where the column fodder is.

maybe not, we are all just guessing here. But I cant think of any other reason that Blackistone would take the candid shots he took. It doesnt matter which parts were truth, fiction or opinion, that has to be one of the nastiest overall columns ever written about any university's athletic situation, including a sweeping historical slap. Recruiting will suffer. I get mad at the lack of attendance by alums too, but a hatchet job like that wont help attendance and it will only drive recruits away further.

I doubt it will affect recruiting at all, one way or the other. If Coach Bennett can recruit after the Dickerson hatchet job, Blackistone's opinion isn't going to sway anyone. It might sting a little to the loyal fans, but the column, in the long run, will prove to be a non-issue.

maybe the Dickerson comments DID hurt. I dont think any of the guys we signed this week had an offer from TCU. I'm just gleaning that from the Roundup. When was last time that happened? Don't expect one next year either with that column in hand. Gary Pattersons hand.

Hurt our recruiting? How many high school kids even read the Morning News?

Blackistone is a hack. He talks about cheating. Did he hear about the Morning news getting caught inflating their subscription numbers? While most newspapers subsciptions are way down, we can't even get the DMN numbers because of their own scandal. But I will bet their numbers are way down as well.

Turner called it like he sees it - and he sees it correctly. The dmn is not our friend and probably never will be. They fall all over themselves bragging on that concrete parking lot of a school in Richardson and seldom if ever give us a sniff of positive reporting. Watch how they spin the Bush library if we get it - guarantee the articles will at best damn us with faint praise......

As far as Whitistone goes, he never sees a story that he can't spin into something racial. If he was the weather reporter, he would say the thunderstorms that swept through Oak Cliff and missed North Dallas was proof positive of racial discrimination. Every time SMU hires someone who isn't black guarantees an article from him accusing us of discrimination. And when we do, he gripes about the length of the contract........He's a one trick pony and also someone who couldn't cut it as a news reporter which is what he was when he came to the dmn. So what did they do with him???? Didn't can his butt like they should have but instead sent him to the sports desk.
