University of Toledo athletic director Mike O'Brien said last night that he had "absolutely not" applied for, or expressed any interest in a similar job at Southern Methodist University in Dallas that will be open at the end of the school year.

O'Brien's name was among several listed in a Dallas newspaper late last week as prospective candidates for the SMU athletic director's position.

"It's unfair that names appear like that," he said. "I can't control that or how seriously people take it."

O'Brien said it was "a possibility" that his name was included because he was a finalist within the last year at Texas Christian University in nearby Fort Worth.

If their mascot isn't the Mudhens, then I never heard of them. Their
marketing department must not be so good.

GOOD :!: :!:

Well good! Yes, Toledo athletic director, it is unfair that such reports appear. I don't see any similarity besides stadium capacity and conference relevance between Toledo and SMU that would make you a good match.

He knows Scott's the man to beat.

I'm not sure what the origin of your crush on Scott Secules is, but to suggest that he or anyone else is "the man to beat" is premature to the point that it borders on slapstick. He might end up with the job, he might not. But at this point, the search committee hasn't been formed yet, and therefore has not identified any candidates. I would think that out of courtesy, if nothing else, Secules and Cooper would get a preliminary interview. Beyond that, it's way too early to say.

The only report I saw that mentioned him was the list in the DMN the other day. I didn't read it as "these candidates are interested." I read it as "here are some people who might be considered. Sounds to me like O'Brien is defending a claim that wasn't even made.
