Daily Campus Response to Blackistone

Postby RE Tycoon » Wed Feb 08, 2006 11:41 am

Not that I think the students will really care, but here is what the Daily Campus had to say about what Balckistone wrote...
http://www.smudailycampus.com/vnews/dis ... 979f94d671

The Blackistone article has seemed to [deleted] a lot of people off, which I believe will do more good than bad. Our whole administration has to be scrapped and this includes Turner. I'm glad Turner called out the DMN in a public forum, I thought it was kinda ballsy, but I do not believe that the DMN is the reason for our situation. Hell, they are one of our biggest corporate sponsors (as well as only a handful of corporate sponsors to begin with). It really opens your eyes when your administration reduces the image of the institution to the level of public perception, it's then you realize your lost. I think blog put it well in his....err, blog:

And that is how it is at SMU. As long as SMU athletics is a small story, as long as SMU athletics doesn’t work that hard to change things and as long as SMU athletics doesn’t do a very good job of selling itself, nothing is ever going to change. SMU athletics becomes a bigger story if it becomes relevant in Texas football and basketball again. The athletic department will be better served to reexamine itself and stop pointing fingers (Turner: blaming the DMN) and making excuses (Turner: SMU isn’t big enough to fund multiple projects at once).

I'm tired of of SMU thinking small and crying "woe is me". SMU needs to freaking grow a pair already and do something about the situation. I'm frustrated enough to join the Jstang and PonySnob crowd and say we should do things right or get out of the business all together. I hope it's the former and I hope we do it starting today.

Not a bad editorial. Ed had a lot of good things to say. I also like the idea of the Senegal Wall.

In the interest of accuracy, I don't recall ever saying we should "get out of the business all together" and if I did I'm pretty sure it was in jest. About the closest thing I can recall I ever said to that was we should consider dropping to a lower division in football. However, I would rather we "do things right" and not have to.

Sorry jstang, I know you're often one of the more critical towards the program (nothing wrong with that, I am as well), so I just lumped you in with the people, and there have been more than a few, who say we should get rid of the program. In my opinion dropping down to a lower level would be tantamount to dropping athletics all together. If that was to ever happen, I would immediately stop supporting athletics and probably the entire University.

Great editorial.....i dont know what it would take to get the students at SMU excited about our programs, besides winning. But of course, the basketball teams already do that

If I were a current student at SMU that article would have done NOTHING to get me to go to a game. It basically just laid down and died.

True. However, my point was that the DC's reply basically reinforced everything Blackistone said. The response was lackluster and unprovoking, much like the student involvement currently.

Cute. But what would you have the DC's response be? Do you have any ideas, or are you another SMU whiner as described by Blackistone?

Way to go, newb.

Hahahahaha.

If I were the DC, I would have tried to come up with some argument/idea/hypothesis about how to reach the students. I would have stated the problem, such as they did, and then tried to come up with some solutions. Or, at least, I would try to get the wheels in motion for other people reading the article to try and find ways to stir up the student population.

But who cares what a rotten Longhorn has to say about this anyway?

Blackistone is an idiot, who cares what this guy thinks. SMU has never had fantastic fan support, oh well. I know that I support the team, and that my alumni friends are all looking foward to possibly visiting wherever SMU's bowl game is next year. Winning solves all, here in Chicago, not many of the city schools draw many people, but when Depaul was in the NCAA tourney, and Northwestern was in the rose bowl, the city and students rallied around them. If we were winning consistenly like TCU, we would be enjoying the same success in attendence and merchandising.

Northwestern was selling out when they were "celebrating" the nation's longest losing streak. There would have been a totally empty stadium here.
