SMU forms committee to find AD
11:11 PM CST on Thursday, February 9, 2006
By CALVIN WATKINS / The Dallas Morning News
UNIVERSITY PARK – SMU officials announced Thursday that the search committee formed to hire a new athletic director will have 15 members, including prominent boosters Gerald Ford and David Miller and trustee Bobby Leach.
Two former athletes, Trent Redden and Jamey Harper, also are on the committee.
The Plano-based search firm of Eastman and Beaudine was hired to help the committee find prospective candidates.
Tom Barry, vice president for executive affairs, is the chairman of the committee.
Thursday's meeting involved a discussion on diversity.
Barry said school president Gerald Turner said he would like a new athletic director hired by June 1.
Jim Copeland, the current AD, is retiring May 31.

From the site.....

"Bob’s leadership extends into the community as well. He recently served as the Chairman of the “Doak Walker National Running Back Award” and the “Southwestern Bell-SMU Athletic Forum”. He was also named in “The New Career Makers” as one of the Top Executive Recruiters in North America."

Tom Barry is chairing the committee. Prima Facia, my first impressions is that is a good thing. He has good relationship with faculty, but being from the business school originally, he is not beholden to the anti-Div 1A crowd on the Faculty Senate. It will be interesting to note whether the Faculty Senate makes any insistence on being in on this decision. Turner can ignore them, and frankly, if the faculty have at least a representative on the committee, then I think he should ignore them. They need to understand that this is a hiring decision, not a popularity contest. Give the faculty too much of a voice, and we will have a university equivalent of a Harriet Myers.

I think the typical SMU AD salary is around $2mil per year.

I think Tom Barry came to SMU when I was there. Would he have began in the Business School in circa 1971? If so, at least back then he was an all right kind of guy that I would apprecaite on the search committee.

I got an "A" in his marketing/advertising class, and given that his area of expertise is marketing and advertising, I suspect he will vet any candidates strengths and weaknesses in that area pretty thoroughly. He was a good guy and wrote one of my recommendations to law school.

We won't hold that law school rec against him, East. Or the 'A' for that matter.

Barry and another new young prof came in together and were great to learn under. We used to have some of our classes at the apartment complex of one of them and drink cold beer while learning. They were not much older than us at the time.

Bob Beaudine is a SMU alum, 1977. Comes to most of our games and I know he wants us to win.
