Tulane's first home game since Katrina in Superdome

Associated Press - ESPN

NEW ORLEANS -- Tulane, which played all 11 of its 2005 games on the road thanks to Hurricane Katrina, will return to the Superdome in New Orleans on Saturday, Sept. 30, in the first of five 2006 home games in the schedule.

The Green Wave plays Conference USA rival SMU -- one of four schools which played host to Tulane teams last fall -- in Tulane's first "true" home game since the storm.

Tulane's other home games are Rice (Oct. 7), Southern Miss (Nov. 11) and Central Florida (Nov. 18) in the Louisiana Superdome, along with non-conference visitor Army (Oct. 28).

Tulane Athletic Director Rick Dickson said Friday that the new schedule takes into account work being done to repair the hurricane-damaged Superdome.

Tulane opens the 2006 season Sept. 9 at Houston in the first of three straight September road games.

One week later, the Green Wave will play Mississippi State in Starkville, Miss. before renewing its series with longtime in-state rival LSU on Sept. 23 in Baton Rouge.

"It will be a challenge for our team to open with three straight road games, but if that means we're back in our home stadium for the last two months of the season, it will be worth the wait," Dickson said.

Tulane and LSU announced last summer that the teams will play a 10-game home and home series beginning in 2006. Tulane has played the Tigers more than any other team in its history.

After back-to-back home games against SMU and Rice, Tulane will travel to Texas-El Paso Oct. 14 before facing its third Southeastern Conference opponent of the season in a game at Auburn Oct. 21.

Great -- that place is going to be as loud as it ever has been for a Tulane game. Talk about the emotional high those guys will be riding. Better tighten up the chinstraps for that one, Ponies. (Besides, you owe us a payback win for this year.)

Hmm... I'd be willing to bet that this game will get picked up nationally. At the very least on CSTV... and if it is on CSTV, let's hope they do a real broadcast (and hope that they've hired at least one decent broadcast team).

But will probably be at least a by-line worth of a mention for SMU, especially if we can pull a win.

I'm convinced we threw the game last time we played them. Lets hope the new AD actually has a sack this time and really brings it to them.

I will be there for sure. Good travel schedule this year. Will try to make most of them, even EL Paso and that hell hole Lubbock.
