Confirmed: Massey to transfer

SMU head coach Phil Bennett confirmed Thursday that running back Richuel Massey has played his last game for the Mustangs.

"Richuel is going to transfer," Bennett said, "either to Texas State or Northwestern (La.) State."

Bennett said Massey's decision was merely a result of the Hillsboro (Texas) native's desire to carry the ball more often. With the emergence in 2005 of freshman DeMyron Martin, as well as the presence of Cedrick Dorsey, Fred Turner and James Mapps, the Mustangs' backfield is crowded.

"Richuel wanted more of an opportunity, and we completely understand that," Bennett said. "We love Richuel, and we understand the way he's thinking. We're going to do everything we can to help him."

It would be interesting if NW St. wound up w/ Meeks and Massey in the same backfield.

Or if Massey becomes another player who got a shot in the NFL after transfering from SMU.

I could se Massey running for big yardage behind Justin Boren at Texas State on the I-AA level...and if he does, SMU fans will be whining about what might have been...completely forgetting the fact that DeMyron was simply the more effective runner. I hope Massey does well and that he does someday get a shot at the NFL, but for the next couple of years, I'd like to see DeMyron become a workhorse for the Ponies. With McKinney filling the role of lead blocker, I still like the M&M Boys in short yardage situations

He wasn't going to beat out DeMyron Martin, so I wish Massey all the success in the world, on the field and in getting his degree.

Are you giving a shout out to Mr. McCown?

Yes...and didn't we have a DL or DE who transferred to Minnesota who ended up playing in the NFL? It was back during the Cave-in era as well.

I'm sorry to see Richuel go. I got the chance to meet him once, and he was classy a guy as you could ever hope to meet. Great guy -- I wish him well.

You really can't go against the kid for reading the writing on the wall. It's a lot like when Foy Munlin transferred from Tech to SMU- everyone in Lubbock liked Foy, but he wasn't gonna fit Leach's system. Leach even gave him the release to play a team that was on the schedule (he usually won't release a player to a team in the same state, conference or on an upcoming non-conference schedule).

Good luck, Mr. Massey.

I too was sorry to see Richuel transfer, but after seeing the backup running backs at the scrimmage today its obvious that he would probably have to play fullback or move to defense to get any playing time at all with this team. With his strength and speed he could have made a hell of an outside linebacker, but I know that he wanted to carry the ball. Good LUCK Richuel!

Thought I spotted Richuel on the sideline. I did see Desmond Jones in the stands.

Yup - he was on the sideline. He hasn't left school yet.
