I'm beginning to think that the same people are making the decisions on SMU's AD and the Bush Library!
Reports in New Orleans say that ours may be yours....Rick Dickson, TU's athletic director, may get your job.
He's an excellent administrator and fund raiser (despite all of the cries from the TU pres about money - he's raised a lot). He moved football season ticket sales from 6K to 14K+; nobody goes to the games, but that's because the team stinks - and bad team = bad attendance at schools like TU and presumably SMU. I'm not sure why he wants to leave - our president's a nutcase, so he may be pushed out. More likely, he tired of working with a nutcase, didn't want to deal with Katrina, and sees an opportunity at a similar school in a great city. He guided us through Cowen's needless "Review" and the immediacy of Katrina....there's only so much anyone can take. The only weakness in his resume appears to be hiring coaches (he only hired basketball coaches at TU; one terrible, one to be determined). However, he extended our dubious football coach twice. He previously ADd at Tulsa and Washington State, leaving both of his own volition. I hate to lose him, if we do, but if he must leave, I'm glad that it's to a school like SMU.
i dont know, but this Dickson guy has always seemed pretty aggressive. I remember thinking in the past that tulane had a pretty good AD in this guy. We could do alot worse. And it says something that the Tulane fan above doesnt want to lose him.
I am sorry, but with the exception of Tubby Smith who he hired at Tulsa fifteen years ago, I can't find one coach that he picked that has done anything. He is on Men's BBall coach no. 2 at Tulane; the first went 60-86.
Unless someone shows me something on this guy that I don't know and can't find, I have to conclude he's an empty suit. He seems good at all the things the faculty and administration care about: grades, money, gender-equity. Blah blah blah. How about a track record of finding coaches that win friggin' games?!?!?! If this guy is going to come in and sell a few more tickets, raise a little more money and build one pretty building, and then see everything dry up because the programs keep losing, I am sorry but I have no interest in it. We already saw that with Copeland. We got enamored with Copeland because he came from Virginia; let's not be enamored with this guy just because he is the AD at Tulane and he is interested.
I would prefer Secules or a winner from D2. Do these kind of candidates surprise me from SMU? No, that is why I thought we should hire Secules without going through this whole process. We seem to prefer the older candidates with a lot of experience over the younger candidates.
Willis to slot receiver!
The right choice is UNI's Rick Hartzell. He has hired not one, but two very successful basketball coaches in Bucknell's Flannery (First Coach to ever win a game from the Patriot Confernece and he has done it two years in a row) and Northern Iowa's McDermott (3 NCAA bids in a row), has gotten new basketball arena's built at both Bucknell and UNI, and just to prove he isnt basketball only, he also hired the current UNI football coach who just took the Panthers to the Semifinals of the I-AA playoffs. Thanks SMUfootballblog for the info. This is a guy with a proven track record of fund raising and hiring winning coaches (what a novel idea). He also has been a very successful Division I official so he actually understands the games he administers. This makes so much sense I know we probably won't even interview him.
