Dale Hansen's Editorial Sunday Night

Postby MrMustang1965 » Mon Mar 20, 2006 12:36 am

Anybody else catch DH's editorial Sunday night? The subject was the Dallas Cowboys, its owner Jerry Jones, the signing of Terrell Owens and Cowboys' fans.

While I don't like Hansen, I have to say that this editorial was on the mark.

What SMU needs to do now is capitalize on the negative publicity of signing T.O. to get more people out to Ford Stadium this Fall.

Hansen made a great point:

In a league desperate to find, develop, and retain the most talented players, teams will employ guys guilty of drug dealing, tampering murder evidence, domestic violence, etc., but 49ers and Eagles were happy to let the most talented player go for simply being himself.

But they were also happy to sign him first.

They'll hate T.O. until his first touchdown catch, then he'll be the greatest player ever to wear a Dallas jersey. Michael Irvin, Lance ("Ants in the Pants") Rentzel were not best known for appropriate behavior, but they sure helped the Cowboys win.

I'm a huge Cowboys fan and I hate TO. I hate the fact they signed him and think he's a cancer to the locker room.

All that said, the guy doesn't need to be compared to the drug users, murderers, wife beaters that take up a large part of the league.

TO has an ego problem. A huge destructive ego problem. It is a huge risk whether they'll be able to keep his mouth shut while he's here.

But he's never done anything illegal. He never attacked his wife. I read that the guy doesn't even drink, much less do drugs. Dude's a health freak.

There's a pretty big difference between complaining about not getting the ball enough and committing a crime.

For those of you feeling all high and mighty, dozens of SMU players probably break more laws in a weekend (underage drinking, PI, etc.) than TO has in his entire life.

And Hansen's just pissed because he hates Parcells. The Cowboys could've traded a 6th and 7th round pick for Tom Brady and Marvin Harrison and Hansen would've bitched. That's his current schtick.

He also hates T.O., and I'd bet he's hoping T.O. has some kind of a meltdown that cripples the team.

I think the point may be misconstrued. In a league that tolerates these types of people, Hansen thought it spoke volumes for two teams to not tolerate this guy, after happily signing him. The comparison lies between teams abilities to tolerate character issues, ultimately not being able to handle Owens as opposed to the criminals.

T.O. works harder than anyone in the league, and his discipline for himself as an athlete should be considered ideal, he just happens to have some unfortunate professional episodes in his past.

Here's ol' Dale's reply to an email I sent him after last night's editorial:

we try to give smu as much coverage as we can ... becuz i agree with you about phil bennett and what he's doing ... and have said so on the air ... but that's the dark side of my business as well

we're not in the business of promoting a team .. we report on teams our viewers are interested in .... and smu is down the list a ways

but i do promise you this ... we will continue to do positive stories about what they're doing becuz i do think it's a good story

dale

and here's his follow-up reply to another email where I asked him to consider doing an editorial on the 'positive things' taking place in the SMU football program:

i mite do that editorial ... but it is the double edged sword you talk about - but it's the old argument ... which comes 1st - the additional coverage or the fans ... but we'll be covering bennett .... and i do hope they keep going in the right direction

We all hated Prime Time when he was a niner but once he put on that Cowboy uniform we embraced him. If you don't like the TO move I think you don't know sports....he makes our team better...he makes our team a contender. Without him we have a 1-2% chance of winning the Super Bowl. With him? That number is much higher.
I miss Troy Matthews.

I am all for promoting SMU, I just don't see the link with T.O. What can he do to promote SMU realistically? I don't remember him promoting Temple football or Stanford football the past few years.

Of course, if we paid him, I guess he would.

Speak for yourself. I hated him in Atlanta, San Francisco, Dallas, Washington and Baltimore. He's a sensational athlete, but he's done more for his rep by talking (rather than tackling) than anyone since Brian Bosworth.
