What do we know about spring ball so far? How is the D and O looking? Any kids stepping up? I know we had to replace two linebackers...who are the candidates?

There are two holdovers who (at least at the moment) appear to be leading the race to start at LB. Wilton McCray has started for most of his two seasons, and would seem the likely candidate to retain his starting spot on one side. In the middle, Reggie Carrington returns, and has always had the coaches excited -- after his freshman season, Coach Bennett said Carrington could be an all-conference-caliber player, and that optimism remains. Beyond that, there are many options.

Paul Heimenz was running with the first team at the practices I saw last week, but to suggest he (or anyone) has locked up a starting spot would be grossly premature. I do know from talking to coaches and players that they also think pretty highly of JUCO transfer Damon Hurst, transfer Pete Fleps and holdover Will Bonilla. There are several others who will be in the mix. I gather the coaches are pretty excited about incoming freshmen Anthony Sowe, Taylor Bon and Patrick Strodtman, but Strodtman is expected to grayshirt (enrolling next January), and the coaches would like to redshirt Bon and Sowe, each of whom has good speed and athleticism, but both need to add strength and weight.

How about on the offensive side of the ball? Anyone looking good? Who looks like they are capable of making some big plays?

The spring roster lists Bonilla at 5-11, 200. I thought he was substantially heavier than that. Anyone know for sure?
He played some last year, and with the loss of six LBs from last year, I would think he has a good chance to get more playing time this season.

When asked, Will informed me that he was closer to 215.

Sounds good!
Can you stretch him out a few inches, too?

That's all? I would have sworn LAST year that he was 230-plus. Certainly hits (at least on special teams) like a bigger player.
