So it's finally official, huh?
After seeing him run wild as a freshman, I'm eager to see what he can do when he finally gets the ball already in open space.
Congrats on jumping the DMN (again).

The long awaited question of Phillips answered, good work!
If it's any indication on past TE involvement, he won't be seeing the ball much, nor does he sound too excited about it

I went to practice yesterday and today, and Phillips was running with the tight ends the whole time I was watching. Yesterday, he ran a crossing route (left to right) and laid out, making a diving catch at the sideline .... with both feet inbounds, prompting a large number of teammates to break into applause. Today I paid more attention to him, and the comments about his hands are true -- they're enormous. Picture a basketball player dribbling a volleyball, and you get an idea for how his hands look on the football. He had his inconsistencies today -- had one pass sail through his hands on the right side, and didn't get his feet down on a corner route in a (non-scrimmage) drill. But he also caught a couple of balls in pretty heavy traffic, once bouncing off a DB and cruising off alone in the direction of the end zone.
Still a work in progress, of course, but he certainly bears watching.

Good point, TGR.
How many different option passes could be created if we had Phillips in at TE, Mapps in at RB and Givens in at WR -- each of whom was a high school QB?
Some kind of triple-reverse option pass to Willis racing downfield.... Poor Rich Phillips might have a heart attack calling that one.

Only problem is the only time all three will be in the game is when we run that play, and we will run it at least three times a game. It will work decently the first time and then get us crushed the second two....sigh

Are you surprised? I read the DMN website every day, and I don't think they've even reported that Richuel Massey is transferring.
Thanks, webguys, for getting to the bottom of this long-lingering speculation.
Knock 'em dead at TE, Chris!

Great article!
I am really impressed with his mind set and how he is approaching the whole situation.
Looks as if he was outgrowing the QB position anyway and he could become a great Tight End. Although VERY premature, I can't help thinking about Antonio Gates and what he has done at TE despite not really playing the position before the NFL.
Hopefully Chris can find success and help the ponies out and if he has any football aspirations past college, this could be a very good move for him.

I will assume this means Bennett is comfortable with what he sees at the QB position this spring. Could Willis be good enough to become a 4 yr starter for SMU?

That would be kind of nice, huh? Somehow, I bet Coach Bennett would love that. But I'm assuming nobody has taken a clear lead, yet, or we might have heard about it here.

Phillips is such a bad [deleted]...
Phillips, who said he will continue wearing his No. 7 jersey in his new position
I realize he hasn't done much at SMU, but I've got a man crush on Phillips. Maybe it was the TCU game where we ran around their D and dove into the endzone. I'm sad that I'll never get to see him guide us to a bowl win as QB, but I look forward to seeing him catching a TD in one. As usual good job PonyFans.

I dig the fact that he wants to continue wearing No. 7.
