Johnnie and DeMyron in the same backfield?

Postby mr. pony » Sat Apr 08, 2006 9:08 pm

Johnnie Fitzgerald looked pretty d*** tough today. If he's ever paired with DeMyron, defenses won't know whether to scratch the clock or wind their a**.

Willis looked great. Slater and Johnson were right there too.

I also liked that Mapps kid as a quick little alternative to the more powerful Martin.

I think Johnson looked like the better #2 today. Slater struggles in the pocket, and obviously feels more at home on the outside.

speaking of the backfield, I didn't pick up one of those roster cards today. Who was #45 on the red?

#45 was Andrew McKinney from Decatur, TX.

Yeah, but Slater was working with the #2 O line. I can't remember - I think Johnson did too, though.

Am I seeing things, or didn't Slater take some snaps behind the #1 line? His passes were right on target, but I don't think he had the arm strength of Willis.

I'd love to hear what people think of the blocking ability that Martin and Fitzgerald have, because I'm like you -- I've got to believe they could be a pretty potent tandem in the backfield. Sure, I'd still want to see Martin get more of the carries, but the two of them could cause major headaches for the opposing defense, and could open things up downfield for the passing game when teams creep eight guys into the box to stop the running game.

DEMYRON IS THA BOMB!!!!!!

Postby DanFreibergerForHeisman » Sun Apr 09, 2006 9:29 pm

As long as DeMyron is in the backfield, SMU is a threat to score every single play.

I wouldn't be surprised if SMU scores over 500 points next season - mainly due to #8.

The 1981 team scored 365.

If SMU goes to the C-USA championship game and a bowl game, it would still have to average 36 points a game to reach 500 points.

We were promised some 2 back sets last year and it never really happened. We have 2 strong backs and could be unstoppable in short yardage situations with Johnie and DeMyron.

Especially with an improved offensive line. I don't know if the line will be better, but I agree with the post someone threw up here about how they looked like they've grown by about 20 pounds per.

The offensive line IS better. There will be some holes blown, even in Lubbock.
