Did I read correctly that Bartel got into the game for exactly one play? On SMU's last offensive play? Was Wallis hurt? That sounds like a tough way for Bartel to make his debut.

It's time to give Richard Bartel a chance, and that means a chance to start and play a whole game. With hard work, Wallis might still become an effective college quarterback, but I'm starting to believe those who say he just isn't ready yet. He has the smarts and the running ability and the dedication, but his throwing mechanics have serious flaws. That defensive end made a great catch on that ball at the end, but that pass was begging to be intercepted because Wallis threw it so low. Bartel throws over the top, which might not have led to a win, but it sure would have prevented that last pass frem being picked.

I was wondering about Wallis' release also, since most of this controversy has arisen subsequent to the Tech game (which was the last game I saw in person). Ponyfan PX pointed it out to me on Saturday, and yes, it is obviously low, low. Probably 45 degrees up from parallel to the ground.

In contrast, Bartel has a very high release. It’s almost awkward looking how high in the arc he actually releases it. With the velocity he gets from this, I assume this is a coached trait (I was always on the other end of the passing game, so I haven’t a clue). And although Bartel didn’t connect on his one attempt, I thought it was a pretty throw and certainly catchable (although it was high velocity, a bit behind the receiver and in traffic).

I’m on the fence as to which QB will be more effective. Wallis seems to run the option effectively. Bartel throws the prettier ball. Obviously the coaches have been of one opinion to date. Too bad the next game is on the road. Will be interesting to see (hear) what happens next.

For whatever it’s worth, the offense did seem to move the ball quite a bit better this week. But is it because they’re learning or because the opponent was standard WAC fare?

Can't wait to see him. I know he has an arm that Cavan just fell in love with. As a former QB, that's saying a lot.

If Donnie ever needs a couple of dummies to throw to, we could probably arrange that too.

Coach Bennett said today that based on practice performance, Wallis will start Saturday at Fresno State.

I agree with Peruna Punch - Bartel looks almost awkward throwing the ball, but at the same time, his arm is lightyears better than Wallis's arm. The one pass Bartel threw was an effortless flick of the wrist, and the ball reached its target with a lot of zip. And that was with a pass rusher closing in on Bartel in a hurry.

And, Peruna Punch points out that Wallis has run the option well, especially Saturday, when he looked very strong running it. So do we keep waiting for Bartel's arm, or do we stay with Wallis and his feet?

Anything else said at practice? If the two quarterbacks really are that close in the coaches’ mind as to who is going to start, I’m admittedly surprised that they’re making the call this early in the week (it’s only Monday for Pete’s sake).

Where was this report recorded??? The team usually does not practice on Mondays. Perhaps that statement is in regards to past practices. I must say that Tate made a number of good runs Saturday that kept the drives going when we needed it. I'm afraid that until we can provide a pocket for Bartel to work out of, Bartel is not going to play unless he gets better at scrambling...assuming that is something one can learn as opposed to just being naturally good at running. On the other hand, I sure as hell wish Tate's passing mechanics were up to Bartel's level.

are you serious?!?!!? i love tate and all, but it seems as though they are waiting for him to lose a limb before they put Bartel in there!!~sheeesh!!

I agree, it's way too early if you are going to use practice performance as a meter to who starts. This season is a bust, so why not get Bartel some on field experience? It can only help us next year, no matter who wins the starting snap.

The best point on this board right now is the fact that when your 0-6 you can judge quarterbacks on practice performance.
You MUST do everything possible to win that first game.
The guys on the team need that taste in their mouths. We are going down an all too familiar road.
