SMU vs. Notre Dame????http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2006/f ... topstories
Notre Dame "...is negotiating to play in Jacksonville and Orlando, Fla., New Orleans and Dallas. The school is looking at existing bowl-game organizations to help stage the contests." Why not? The article says they're not looking for more heavyweights. "We need to have a schedule that's conducive to success." Well, SMU has helped a lot of other programs it's played over the last few years. Why not ND? Long live Thomas Sowell!
SMU and ND have long history of playing each other. It makes a lot of sense to renew the rivalry. They often played SMU at the Cotton Bowl in the 50s. It would be interesting to see what size crowds went to those games.
AustinTX
Methodists v Catholics! Ford Stadium should be PACKED for this game! And, no...it should NOT be played at Texas Stadium, the Cotton Bowl or the new Dallas Cowboys/Jerry's World stadium. It should be played on the CAMPUS OF SOUTHERN METHODIST UNIVERSITY...or not at all!
are you kidding? I'd love to see it at Ford, but that ain't gonna happen. We would be foolish to take that negotiating position and watch someone else play Notre Dame in our backyard. It should be played at a renovated Cotton Bowl during the Fair. How awesome would that be? We used to squeeze in a game at the Fair in between OU-Texas and Grambling-Prairie View.
I always liked our games at Texas Stadium and found the Cotton Bowl difficult to park and uncomfortable to sit. I am also sure that Jerry's new place will be a sight to see. But, if ND were to come to town, I think I would prefer the CB at Fair time. Once a year with party buses to the game leaving from Dart and/or Campus would be very nostalgic.
And I have to laugh at you, too...over and over. You think you're Godalmighty Himself. I'm entitled to my opinion just like everyone else is on this board. Shove it, Stallion. And just for the record, SMU probably never will play Notre Dame ever again so what's the point in even having this discussion? Yeah, I know it ain't Div. 1-AA, plowboy. BFD! At least HoopFan brings up valid points without being an a**hole about it. Here's a program from SMU v ND in 1949 ![]()
I have posted this before, ND will not consider traveling and playing in a 32K (or an expanded 45K) stadium. It is a non-starter.
We need and want this possibility and we are not in a position to demand anything. The prospects of renewing the tradition, abeit from a long time ago, in the Cotton Bowl would be too cool for words. Let's be ambitious, but not naive. Pony Up
While I wish we could somehow expand our capacity to induce them to want to come to campus, I just don't see that happening. Their concept of College Football Barnstorming means let as many of their fans in this region have the opportunity to see them play as possible. That's their entire stated purpose, which includes recruiting, find raising and all the trappings. I'm thrilled to get to watch SMU most Saturdays at FORD. However, my memories of watching them at the Cotton Bowl during the 90's is not so bad that I wouldn't welcome the chance to have our guys the chance play in front of that many folks, get to play ND and take the proceeds straight to the bank. I'd rather it wasn't during the Fair, however. ND football would draw enough attention without any additional distractions and competition for parking.
Are there past SMU/ND games that come to mind. We need Old Mustang for his great memories. Long live Thomas Sowell!
MrMustang...don't let Stallion get to you...if you knew him, you would know that he is a lonely, bitter, "wish I was like my brother" wannabe...after all, he has a "law degree" from Tech..nuff said.
According to the Star Tele it is either TCU or Baylor v ND at the Cotton Bowl or JerryWorld:
By WENDELL BARNHOUSE Star-Telegram Staff Writer SOUTH BEND, Ind. - Notre Dame is going retro when it comes to future football schedules. The plan to schedule games around the country could bring the Irish to the Metroplex for games in 2009 and beyond. If the Irish schedule a game in this area, either at a refurbished Cotton Bowl or at the new Cowboys stadium in Arlington, the Notre Dame opponent could be either TCU or Baylor -- whose athletic director, Ian McCaw, previously worked for Notre Dame athletic director Kevin White. According to TCU athletic director Danny Morrison, associate athletic director Jack Hesselbrock has had "two or three conversations" with Notre Dame about scheduling. "We have a lot of conversations with a lot of people about future schedules," Morrison said Wednesday. "I don't want to overplay the conversations with Notre Dame, but it is something that we're interested in pursuing." Expanding schedules to 12 regular-season games gives Notre Dame the option of scheduling around the country. The Irish also will consider games in Jacksonville, Fla., New Orleans and Orlando, Fla. "All of this is in the very preliminary stages," Notre Dame associate athletic director John Heisler said. "We have a lot of logistic and numerical issues to work out, but we're definitely looking to schedule games around the country." Heisler said Notre Dame has had preliminary contacts with Dallas, San Antonio and Houston about scheduling games in those cities. Notre Dame prefers working with a city that stages a bowl game. "We've had four preliminary conversations with Notre Dame," Cotton Bowl executive director Rick Baker said Wednesday. "We'd be excited to help Notre Dame in any way that we could when it comes to putting on a Notre Dame home game in this area." Baker said he believes a Notre Dame vs. TCU or Baylor game would draw well. The school still plans to schedule seven home games but count the "neutral site" game as an eighth "home" game. Legendary coach Knute Rockne helped start Notre Dame's mystique during his 13 seasons in South Bend. Rockne had the "Traveling Irish" play 18 games in New York, Chicago, Baltimore, Philadelphia, New Orleans and Indianapolis. "I think over time we've really begun to behave like a wannabe conference member," White said. "I think it was real important for us to go back to our roots and behave more like an independent...." Somebody ought to give the Cotton Bowl guy a swirlie. Baylor and TCU would draw well at the Cotton Bowl against ND? Only marginally better than SMU. I think many SMU alums in the Dallas area would turn out for that game. And many would travel to see it.
