SOUTH BEND, Ind. - Notre Dame is going retro when it comes to future football schedules. The plan to schedule games around the country could bring the Irish to the Metroplex for games in 2009 and beyond.
If the Irish schedule a game in this area, either at a refurbished Cotton Bowl or at the new Cowboys stadium in Arlington, the Notre Dame opponent could be either TCU or Baylor -- whose athletic director, Ian McCaw, previously worked for Notre Dame athletic director Kevin White.
According to TCU athletic director Danny Morrison, associate athletic director Jack Hesselbrock has had "two or three conversations" with Notre Dame about scheduling.
"We have a lot of conversations with a lot of people about future schedules," Morrison said Wednesday. "I don't want to overplay the conversations with Notre Dame, but it is something that we're interested in pursuing."
Expanding schedules to 12 regular-season games gives Notre Dame the option of scheduling around the country. The Irish also will consider games in Jacksonville, Fla., New Orleans and Orlando, Fla.
"All of this is in the very preliminary stages," Notre Dame associate athletic director John Heisler said. "We have a lot of logistic and numerical issues to work out, but we're definitely looking to schedule games around the country."
Heisler said Notre Dame has had preliminary contacts with Dallas, San Antonio and Houston about scheduling games in those cities. Notre Dame prefers working with a city that stages a bowl game.
"We've had four preliminary conversations with Notre Dame," Cotton Bowl executive director Rick Baker said Wednesday. "We'd be excited to help Notre Dame in any way that we could when it comes to putting on a Notre Dame home game in this area."
Baker said he believes a Notre Dame vs. TCU or Baylor game would draw well.
The school still plans to schedule seven home games but count the "neutral site" game as an eighth "home" game.
Legendary coach Knute Rockne helped start Notre Dame's mystique during his 13 seasons in South Bend. Rockne had the "Traveling Irish" play 18 games in New York, Chicago, Baltimore, Philadelphia, New Orleans and Indianapolis.
"I think over time we've really begun to behave like a wannabe conference member," White said. "I think it was real important for us to go back to our roots and behave more like an independent...."
