For you band types...

An Aggie friend who graduated in '81 was asking about "that annoying song ( Peruna ) that your band played over and over again." Do any of you band folks know the official ( or unofficial ) record of times the song was played in a game ? Seems I remember the game at UT as being non-stop in the 2nd half in 1981.

BTW..I know it is only May...but BEAT TECH.

If it is played non stop, isn't that just once? Kind of like how many grooves are on a standard LP record. (BTW, that is what we played before CDs.)

1979-80 Homecoming won for the first time in nine years with a 35-10 victory over Texas Tech. Band set a new record of 701 playing "Peruna" at the Tulane game.

For '79 and '80 Homecoming wins, your welcome.

Proud of you Ponyte. I am sure you would like us to be playing the "big boys" again. And winning of course.

I can't tell you how much I enjoyed playing the big boys and how much I look forward to the day that we are playing them again.

The current record is the 701 set at the SuperDome at the Tulane Game in 1979.

The previous record was 690 times set in 1971 at the SMU/Texas basketball playoff game in Waco. SMU and Texas were co-conference champs and a playoff game was played to determine who would represent the SWC in the NCAA tournament. The band started playing Peruna at half time and did not stop until the end of the third overtime period. Unfortunately, Texas won in the third overtime.

I will never forget that night in Waco as this poor freshman was initiated in to the spirit that is The Mustang Band.

And by the way, these are records that will probably never be broken with the new NCAA rules. In football, the band can not play after the team breaks the huddle until the ball is in motion, and in basketball, the band can not play when the game in progress, only during dead ball can the band play.

The Mustang Band jokingly refers to this rule as the anti-mustangband rule.

Further proof that those rules will not be enforced unless someone complains, and then there would only be a warning. The band should have the courage to just play whenever it damn well pleases until someone says something.

I agree and coach Bennett needs to tell the athletic department that he wants the band playing like it use to and to force the other teams bench to complain. The band directors have been ordered by the athletic department to follow the letter of the rule. The athletic department is still running scared after 20 years. It is time we get some b*lls over there and test the rules.

Walk in the gray area and wait till someone says something. I am not saying we should blattenly break the rules, but we should bend them as far as we can. The non playing rule is just one example. Let the band play peruna, fire up the team and force the other team to complain. Take the warning and then follow the rules. Next game, same plan.
