Rice - Game of the Year?Dave Campbell's calls the Rice game SMU's 'Game of the Year.'
That, pleasure-seekers, is BS. The GOTY is the one that, if won, would cause the greatest shock wave in all quarters; one that would turn heads - 360 degrees; one that would signal the return of our program. THAT game, folks, is Sept. 2 at Lubbock. THIS IS THE YEAR AND THIS IS THE GAME. To review - post-death penalty near-shockers: 9/10/94 @#13 UCLA 17 SMU 10 10/14/95 @#22 A&M 20 SMU 17 10/29/94 (@S.A.)#7 A&M 21 SMU 21 10/1/94 #18 UNC 28 SMU 24 9/16/94 @#14 OU 24 SMU 10 9/27/97 #23 BYU 19 SMU 16 OT It's time to win one of these. The TCU win was huge. Tech would be monstrous. It's time....
Re: Rice - Game of the Year?
Yep. Kind of makes you think we didn't know how good we had it in 94 and 95.
And now you know why DC's TFM is a pile of doo-doo.
Who wrote that article? And what was their reason for classifying it as the GOTY?
Is Houston our rival on the schedule? Tulsa? UTEP? Sun Belt's UNT? I don't like that TCU is not on our schedule, but Rice is our most natural rival on the schedule. Bennett got what he wanted. I also hope they become our "whupping boy." Willis to slot receiver!
TCU is on a one year hiatus and I would say as of now is our biggest rival. They are one we should strive to mimic as to how they got where they are. But my true belief is that, if we progress properly, our biggest rival is not even on the radar yet. For years, Oklahoma and Texas were rivals and not in the samer conference. We need to develope to a degree where we can play with the big boys and demand respect. We are far from there and many things still need to change. But striving to have Rice as a rival or even claiming they are one now is the kind of defeatist attitude that has gotten us where we are today. To paraphrase an old quote I know, play like you want to be and that is how you will become. Play like you are and that is how you will stay.
Mrydel,
I would not call it defeatist. I have posted this before, but I believe that we have four "must win" games. They are the 3 Sun Belt games and Rice. At this stage in our program, these are the games we must win to evolve as a program. Rice is moving a bunch of players around, like their QB Armstrong who single-handedly beat us two years ago. Generally, I agree with you that we should look and think big. But, this year, I am most excited for the Rice game. I would guess we will get beat by Tech by 50 points. If it is less than 30, we will probably have a good season. I would be happy as a fan with four wins this season, but I hope for 6 or 7. Willis to slot receiver!
Rice is not our rival. You can't say "ooooh, I just can't wait until the Owls come to town. Gonna tailgate for days!" Well, the lengthy tailgate is allowable -- even encouraged -- but a rival has to be a team that you dislike, too. I think Rice earns too much respect: squeaky clean program, great academic school, their players and coaches always conduct themselves with the utmost class.
Conversely, TCU is a rival. So we're not playing them this year. Don't care -- that's the school I love to hate. Whether we beat them by 50 or they beat us by 50, that's the team -- whether it's football, basketball, soccer, golf .... I don't care -- that I want most to see the Ponies beat. Once a Mustang, ALWAYS a Mustang!
I hate their new coach and his proven ability to recruit. I also hate Major Applewhite's potential to steal a bunch of potential SMU recruits to Rice. I also hate that their school has now shown a commitment towards football, and if we are not careful we will become their whupping boy. Willis to slot receiver!
