best to wear #19 ever

Rashaan Salaam, TB, Colorado, 1993-94
Salaam won the 1994 Heisman with a running style that combined speed and power. SMU's Eric Dickerson might have won this number, but we couldn't afford what it cost to recruit him.
Honorable mention: SMU TB Eric Dickerson.

ouch.

edit- sorry i forgot to mention this was part of espn.com on their main college football page.- 6/26 --- I hope #37 is in the bag.
go smu.

And folks wonder why we can't forget the death penalty......

That was the true damage done by that ridiculously unfair punishment: We were 'the century's worst cheaters'. Hardy har har.

I'm sure Colorado's recruitment of Rashaam was on the up and up.

ESPN can kiss my #ss.

Ditto.

Rashaan Salaam couldn't carry Dickerson's jock.

I don't recall Salaam having a very good NFL career. Isn't ED in the NFL Hall of Fame?

I took the liberty of deleting part of your post to make it accurate. Sunshiner.

Khalid Beard was well on his way until SMU retired it and made him resume his career in no. 9

ED was second in Heisman balloting, helped lead SMU to a #2 ranking. Still holds the NFL single season rushing record. Salaam- give me a break. ED wins in a landslide. I wonder how many hookers it took Colorado to recruit Salaam?

ED was the greatest pure running back to ever play in the NFL.

Period.

(Emmitt was more of a Nolan Ryan - longevity. Other RBs have their greatness aspects, but ED was the man - smooth and fast).

ED got screwed to Hershel - it was a makeup Heisman for the prior year and Hershel wasn't coming back.

How many losses did we have?

How many losses did #1 Penn State have?

There was bias against SMU even then...

Actually, it was more of a sympathy vote for Joe Paterno, than a bias against SMU. Still sucked, though, and you're right, it was not supported by the records. Nevertheless, SMU could have taken care of business against Arkansas and avoided the problem altogether. Those were the days.

I hope you mean by "taking care of business" that SMU should have just won the game. The "going for two" option was not viable. Missing the 2 point conversion would have left SMU in a very lesser bowl game than the Cotton Bowl. Kicking the point assured the Cotton Bowl, and to top it off, SMU had a chance to win but missed a last second 53 yard field goal. If SMU had the fan following to have warranted a bigger bowl than the risk might have been worth the reward, but not in this case.

By the way, I had seats on the 50 at that game. Where were you?

Actually, wasn't his vice of choice more of the herbal variety? Like in Nate Newton-esque quantities?
