ESPN Poll: Which school has the best nickname?

There's a poll on ESPN.com that asks what the best things in college sports are. One question is about school nicknames, another is the best logo. I would like to say that SMU should have been included in the options. I've got several reasons for this.

1. Logo - wasn't our team nickname and our logo the inspiration of the Ford Mustang? From a pure instance of usage aspect, that would make our logo and nickname the most widely used (not confirmed of course) nickname and logo out there. I can't recall another mascot being honored in such a way.
2. Microsoft Windows - you have the ability to change your pointer and the default hourglass for thinking if you are a Windows user to what is no doubt inspired by the SMU Mustang. (Its a red mustang that runs in place as a substitute for the hourglass.) Go to Settings/Control Panel/Mouse. This cannot be coincidence. Do we have a SMU alumni working at Microsft or what?

On a sour note (that Frogie Fever might appreciate), TCU made the short list of best nicknames.

I agree our live mascot (No offense Peruna lovers) may not be the best live mascot, as a shetland pony may not embody what the Mustangs are really about.

The running red mustang is great. Thanks for the tip.

Speaking of, why is it a shetland pony? Seems kinda silly... and frankly looks kinda silly.

A full size mustang would be too difficult to handle on the sidelines and even Jesse Henderson could not keep up with a full size mustang as a handler when running the horse onto the field.

On the mascot related front, all you folks who complain about the lack of SMU paraphenalia in local stores need to run up to Bed Bath and Beyond on Park Lane and grab your silver travel coffee mug with the mustang logo on it. I turned it over and it is indeed an officially licensed collegiate product. Didn't buy one, I drink my 7-11 coffee from styrofoam.

Please do not tell me you find used ones and rinse them out.

Not that there's anything wrong with that.

Yes - full size Mustang would be dangerous. I recall a Pernua handler once got dragged to the ground and got seriously injured. I think he tore his ACL!

Plus, I recall another time when he (Peruna - not the handler) pooped on the field. Better to be from a Shetland Pony than from a full sized Mustang dump.

Wasn't that steaming gift left at TCU? I can't think of a better place for it. Our little shetland is dangerous enough. Peruna I killed the Fordam Ram. One Peruna kicked BEVO and knocked the wind out of him. Another chased the Baylor Bear around their stadium which forced them to change to cubs. Another tried to mate the Red Raiders Horse which of course was pretty funny. Add in the cheerleaders bitten on the rear by Peruna and opposing bands that have gotten in his way, and you have a pretty feisty pony. Since a wild Mustang cannot have a rider, having runners along side makes it a necessity that it be a Shetland Pony. And our future fans under the age of 12 love him. Don't diss Peruna, he's great.

Thank goodness we have a Mustang as the mascot. Let’s forget for the moment that the NCAA doesn't allow certain mascots and just concentrate on the really crummy ones. First, some folks have a bitter tasting nut as a mascot (Buckeyes). Some folks have a stupid cow that was eaily herded for hundreds of miles just to be slaughtered and turned into hamburgers (Longhorns). Let’s not even talk about farmers that want to play Army.

And of course Arkansas State due to political correctness is changing form the Indians to the Scarlets. Their mascot is a photo of Vivian Leigh.

Got one for christmas a couple of years ago. Keeps the coffee hot, fits into the cup holder in my car .... I highly recommend it.

Yeah, and Mustangs were put out to pasture because it was easier to steal a horse than have to chase one down. Eventually they were slaughtered to make room for cattle (Longhorns) on the open range. So what?

This is dumb.

At least my school mascot isn't the Banana Slugs or the Rainbow Warriors.
