DALLAS (SMU) - Former SMU player and coach Forrest Gregg will be the
keynote speaker at the second-annual SMU Football Kickoff Luncheon,
presented by The Gardner Group, on Wed. Aug.16. The event will be held
at the Doubletree Hotel Dallas - Campbell Centre (Caruth Haven and 75
Central Expy.). Doors open at 11:30 a.m. and lunch will be served at
noon.
An SMU leader as a student and an alum, Gregg was a two-way player on
the Mustang football team from 1952-55. A dominant force on both sides
of the line as a collegian, he earned All-SWC honors in 1954 and 1955
and also served as SMU co-captain as a senior.
After his career on the Hilltop concluded, Gregg moved on to a 14-year
career in the National Football League. He played for the Green Bay
Packers for 13 years and closed his NFL career in 1971 with the Dallas
Cowboys. While with the Packers, Gregg won a pair of Super Bowl Rings in
1967 and 1968. He set a then-Green Bay record by playing in 187
consecutive games, was chosen All-Pro eight straight years from 1960-67,
played in nine Pro Bowls and was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of
Fame in 1977.
When football returned to the Hilltop in 1989, it was natural that Gregg
would play a part. He served as head coach of the 1989 and 1990 Mustangs
before becoming SMU's athletic director (1990-94). He received the
Distinguished Alumni Award in the fall of 2000. The award represents the
highest honor the university and its Alumni Association can bestow upon
an alumnus of the institution. He is one of five former Mustangs to have
his number retired.
Fans in attendance will also hear from head football coach Phil Bennett
and Director of Athletics Steve Orsini during the luncheon. All
attendees will receive a commemorative SMU item.
Mustang Fans have the option of sponsoring a table for $600, which
includes eight tickets and the choice of two players, two coaches or a
player and a coach. Individual tickets are available for $75. Sign up
quickly because seating is limited and the choice of players/coaches is
on a first come, first serve basis.
