SMU Football Notes from the DMN

Postby MrMustang1965 » Sun Aug 06, 2006 3:08 am

By KEITH WHITMIRE / The Dallas Morning News
UNIVERSITY PARK – Not only is sophomore running back DeMyron Martin bigger – up about 10 pounds to 235 – his role in the offense will be larger this season, coach Phil Bennett said. Watching highlights of last season, when Martin had four 100-yard games, made Bennett more determined to use Martin.

"I knew he had a good year, but the more I watched our cut-ups, the more I knew how good of a player he could be," Bennett said.

Briefly ...
Bennett said freshman wide receiver Bryan McCann from Oklahoma City will probably be the only freshman who will play this season. ... The Mustangs are using signals to send in plays during practice, just like in a game. SMU plays four of its first six games on the road. ... Strength and conditioning coach Chuck Faucette was injured Saturday morning when he was clipped by a side mirror while riding his motorcycle, Bennett said. Faucette's condition is unknown.

McCann is getting a lot of reps at cornerback.

I was wondering about that. McCann is listed on the roster at WR, but he worked at CB in practice yesterday, at least while I was there. As advertised, he looked extremely fast.

Coach Faucette was out there yesterday, leading pre-practice stretching. Seems he's just as tough as he was when he played. Get better in a hurry, Diesel.

Here's to you, Coach Faucette, for a speedy recovery.
