Special Presentation

I had the opportunity tonight to make a special presentation to the SMU Mustangs football team at the request of Coach Phil Bennett during their team meeting.

A couple of years ago, Coach Bennett asked me about the license plates on my car and the history behind them. I told him that my father got them the very first year special vehicle plates were available in Texas and he re-ordered them every year after that. I continue the tradition now that my father has passed on.

Coach Bennett said, "I'd like to get one of those!" I told him I'd see what I could do. In my father's belongings I found the plate from 1982. Tonight, I presented to Coach Bennett and the team that plate with the following inscription underneath: "In memory of I.T. Hurst, SMU '48, SMU's #1 Fan"

I asked Coach Bennett and the team to remember the pride and passion my father had for SMU each time they exit the locker room and see that S.M.U. plate and to use it as inspiration to WIN!

Coach Bennett told the team that it will take a special place of honor inside the trophy case alongside the Iron Skillet and the Mayor's Cup.

That's fantastic, MM65! Very cool of you to make that gift, and that's extremely nice of Coach Bennett to put the plate in there with the Skillet. Wish I'd been there to see the presentation.

Great work MM65! Always a good idea to remind the current players about the rich football tradition we have at SMU. Go Ponies!

MM65, having known your dad for at least 40 plus years. I know that he has a very big smile on his face looking down at you from Heaven. Good job R.H.

Guess he saved it because 82 was a special year. If you've got the other 82 plate, maybe they could hang that on the tunnel entrance to the field to slap for good luck as they come out. :D
