Anybody of the oldtimers on the board have any clue why we played Missouri every year from 1945 to 1960? Reason I ask - my cousin went to Mizzou and had been trash talking his last visit here (about a year ago) - I bet him 12 pack of beers that SMU had a winning record against Mizzou.... and thank you PonyFans Historical Football Scores, I became 12 beers richer.

Anyhow we were talking again the other day, and he brought it up, so I looked back, and noticed we played them quite a bit in the 50s - with a nice 8 game winning streak, and then I noticed that we played them every year in that era.

Can anyone shed some light on that era? What was the connection to Mizzou? Was there some sort of an affiliation? Or was it simply two likeminded ADs (did they even have ADs in the 40s?) getting together and deciding to sign a contract for a number of years?

Anyhow, just curious.

I have no answer but we played them in 1971 in Columbia (and lost).

From what I can find from 1945 to 1960 SMU was 12-4 against Mizzou so make sure it is good beer. Something like Mickey's Big Mouth

From what I understand, Mizzou's head football coach Don Faurot had a good relationship with Matty Bell and the geographic closeness made it a good game all around for both sides.

SMU and Missouri first played in 1926 and 27 (1-0-1 for the Ponies) then played every season from 1945-60 (SMU went 12-4 in that period). The two schools picked up again in 1967 (a 21-0 win for the Tigers in Columbia) and then played in 1971, 73, 93 and 96 (SMU was 1-3 in that period).

I went to the 1973 SMU-Mizzou game in Texas Stadium, a battle of unbeaten Wishbone teams that MU won (sadly) 17-7.

First I've seen of that. Good to know though. I like Missouri for whatever reason, should be fun playing them.

They have us listed at the 19th but I don't know how when we're set to take on Texas Tech then. O well we'll see.

Does anyone remember playing Missouri in 1996 at the Cotton Bowl? We lost by one point. If I remember correctly, we scored a touchdown in the 4th quarter to go up by one, and the extra point was blocked and returned the length of the field for two points. Now that's a bad way to lose.

I was at Faurot Field in 93 to see the Mustangs tie Mizzou. It was the first time I saw the Mustangs play. At the time I didn't know I was going to attend SMU but I rooted for the Mustangs because they were from TX. I was attending military school in Missouri and the student body was invited to one football game a year. I thought that was pretty cool. And my first year there I got to see the infamous 5th down game between Mizzou and Colorado in 1990. I believe Colorado won the NC that season.

Yes, I was at that game. SMU had the ball late in the 4th quarter and drove into range for a GW FG attempt. After getting near the 20, SMU set up for the kick on the last play of the game. The kicker (Hernandez?) got the kick up, but the ball glanced off the top of the upright as it went past. The FG was ruled no good and Missouri won. I'd never before (and never since) seen a ball glance of the top of the the upright without changing direction. I also learned that kick off the top of the uprights are ruled no good.

Not to stir up a hornet's nest, but SMU finished 5-6 that year and Copeland fired Rossley. I've always wondered if that ball was an inch or two more inside, would Rossley have kept his job with a 6-5 record? How would the subsequent years for SMU been any different?

I think the game that we lost to them in the early 70's was the one that got us put on NCAA probation when Dave Smith was paying the players for tackles in that game (and wasn't paying them enough because we lost). One player felt short changed after that game and told the NCAA. Thus followed another probation.

Not the 1971 Missouri game. Hayden was still coach at that time.

awesome.. tech and tcu for the next four years.. way to go schedule makers.. thats what i am talking about.. our non conference games should be old SWC foes.. i love it

I like Missouri and it will be interesting playing them in '09 and '10. They are a talented team, though sometimes they don't do as much with their talent as they should.

I too was there.... but have suffered so many Mustang dissapoinments I had forgotten about the specifics. Thanks for the reminder. Woe is the SMU fan.
