DMN: SMU Scrimmage Coverage?

Nothing. But Calvin Watkins does have a note about Ryan Harp giving an oral commitment to SMU to play basketball in Sunday's DMN. Of course, that happened last WEDNESDAY! Again, day late and a dollar short. Par for the course when the DMN covers SMU sports.

But by golly...the DMN made damn sure they had a story about UT's scrimmage 200 miles away from Dallas, didn't they? Posted on the DMN web site at 8:02 p.m. on Saturday.

There is a blurb about the scrimmage in Sunday's Sports Day - page 9C.

Wrong, got this morning's paper and found out Bennett thinks the QB's looked crappy.

They barely cover games, why would they cover an intrasquad scrimmage?

Sounds like with as poor as the QB's looked, we should be glad there wasn't a full page writeup.

I had long since gone to bed when it was posted on the web site (1:31 a.m. Sunday) and I no longer get 'home delivery' of the DMN. Good for the DMN. Glad to see there was coverage.

Here's the article by Calvin Watkins:

By CALVIN WATKINS / The Dallas Morning News

UNIVERSITY PARK – After Saturday night's scrimmage, coach Phil Bennett expressed concern about the quarterback position, even though starter Justin Willis (Denton Ryan) completed 16 of 23 passes for 156 yards with one interception and no touchdowns.

Backup Corey Slater completed eight of 17 passes for 91 yards with two interceptions and one touchdown. No. 3 quarterback Eric Johnson went 4-of-7 for 23 yards.

"We've got to get better," Bennett said. "Slater was average to poor, and he was pressing a little."

Willis is still considered the starter, Bennett said. Willis was supposed to have a wart removed from his right foot Thursday. Instead, Willis will have the procedure today, following practice.

Briefly ...
RB James Mapps led all rushers with 10 carries for 85 yards. ... Starting RB DeMyron Martin (Allen) was limited to five carries because of a sore knee. Martin also caught a touchdown pass. ... Freshman Bryan McCann, who is competing with Devin Lowery (Grand Prairie) for the starting left corner spot, had an interception. ... WR Blake Warren led the team with six receptions for 59 yards, and Bobby Chase (Irving) caught a 33-yard touchdown pass.

Well if you don't take the paper anymore, you have no standing to complain about what is covered anyway. When I read the paper, I have a paper in my hands.

I have just as much right to complain about the DMN's lack of coverage of SMU athletics as you do about how SMU has done nothing to improve its football team in the past 20 years.

And I said I no longer get 'home delivery'. I didn't say I don't read it or have a copy in my hands. I either buy a copy off the rack or borrow one or read the DMN web site which has the same content as the hard copy version...but with a lot less advertising! Holy cow! The Sunday Edition weighs almost 5 lbs. with all the advertising for department stores, grocery stores and real estate!

Okay, my mistake. That's two jtstang retractions in two days, man. You're on a roll!

Hey MrOverReaction1965-I bet almost 90% of the commitments announcements in the DMN for all schools in Texas have been announced 3+ days late. I almost believe that the DMN has agreed to a 3 day exclusive to Rivals-the service the DMN uses-before they announce the commitment in the paper. But it has been universal with every school except perhaps for the commitments they break themselves. Let go of the conspiracy theories.. As for the lack of coverage I believe when the MINOR LEAGUE Dallas Ft Worth Spurs were in Dallas theygot about a 10th of the coverage that the Rangers get playing BIG TIME Major League Baseball. SMU consciously made a decision to drop out of BIG TIME College Football and deemphasized the program. You're too late-its over SMU is now in the Minor Leagues as far as 95% of the Dallas sports viewing public is concerned.

All the more reason why I 'talk up' SMU's sports teams whenever the opportunity presents itself.
