abbreviated Scrimmage Review

Postby tmustangp » Sun Aug 20, 2006 1:02 am

i was very disapointed in the downfield passing game tonight (lack there of)..
on the other hand i will do my best to review what i saw

running game:
-I give it an A... for those of you who weren't there, the coaches blew the whistle upon first contact.. so most plays were basically a wash.. but there were alot of times where the rb had atleast 5 yds before he got touched..
-the four backs:martin, dorsey, mapps and fitzgerald.. wow bennet has lots of options back there.. martin is a stud period.. dorsey looks like he has been watching film of Mapps, because he has some new moves.. Mapps, ducks and darts and wham! 5 yds when it looks like he had nothing.. he does great job of ducking behind the big boys upfront and then darts into the hole.. fitzgerald was w/ the 2nd team all night, but looked good..
-again b/c of down by 1st contact the running game was distorted and did little to show slater and willis' scrambling abilities..

short passing game:
-I stress short b/c most of the passes were thrown no deeper than 10 yds..but they were completed.. I bet the completion 60%... did not see one good screen play(probably because the dline knew they couldn't hit the qb) screens work b/c DL see a free shot on the qb and someone runs in behind them.. but there were lots of bubble screens and swing passes .. mapps looked great on the swing passes..
-TD pass: slater to martin, it was PA(playaction) throw back pass to martin.. slater barely got it over the db's head and martin made a great catch to score..
-slater also had a stupid INT to reggie carrington that was returned for a td..the DEF was in a cov 2 which is usually a good time to throw a slant.. but reggie made a good read and slater hesitated on the throw and threw right to reggie who returned it for a td
-willis could have had an easy fade to pellerin on the sideline but he grossly underthrew him and the frosh mccan made a good make up play to pick it off.. but it was underthrown by about 5 yds so it should have been an easy td
-the line did a good job giving the QB's time and a good pocket to throw out of... willis and slater looked very comfortable in the pocket (considering our DL that is a positive thing)

special teams:
-again i forgot his name b/c i left the roster at teh stadium.. but #15 (too lazy to go to roster online) is an oustanding punter and looks like he will win the dual duty as FG kicker.. he had a 55 yd (net) punt with great hang time that led to a fair catch then another 60+ punt that was a touch back.. he made a 42 yd FG..
-bennett's son had two bad snaps on fg but then made a good one later on.. good to see HP kids continuing to play at smu (berry was in street clothes- assuming he is academically inelgible)

DEF:
-it is hard to say anything about the defense tonight.. the OFF did not throw the ball downfield and w/ the down upon contact there wasn't much a chance for the DEF to do much.. but there were several sacks.. but had it been a real game, I think our Running Game might have run for over 200yds .. but they did not give a big play.. Again it is real hard to judge the defense when the scrimmage is run that way.. not a game situation, down by contact, can't get close to QB

OTHER POINTS:
-i love seeing the Pistol implemented.. it will help Martin dramatically b/c he will be hitting the line of scrimmage at full speed and heading down hill instead of going E and W..
ex: A Peterson last year was severly hampered by off tackle plays when he lined up next to Bomar in the shotgun.. The Martin's and Peterson's of the world were born to be in the I formation
-the OL had definatley gained trust b/c there was little rolling out by the QBs.. Kenard Burley is one big boy.. i bet he turns heads on the campus
-
one final point: I had to leave at 830, so more happened that I didn't see.. please add what happened after 830...
