SHREVEPORT, La. – New Orleans Saints’ rookie-sensation, Reggie Bush wasn’t the only running back making his ESPN Monday Night Football debut in Shreveport, La., last night during the Dallas Cowboys preseason game against the New Orleans Saints at Independence Stadium.
Former Troup High School and Southern Methodist University stand-out running back and current Cowboy, Keylon Kincade also made his debut on Monday Night Football in Dallas’ 30-7 win against the Saints.
Although Kincade wasn’t barraged by the media or camera flashes like Bush, the 5-11, 208-pound third-year back was also trying to make an impression with coaches.
“A game is a game, no matter what day it is,†Kincade said. “You just have to approach it the same. If you play on a Wednesday you have to play it like it’s a Sunday. I got two opportunities on kickoff, and I did a pretty good job. I just try and do what they ask me to do.â€
Despite getting no reps on the offensive side of the ball against the Saints, Kincade had five carries for 20 yards in Dallas’ first preseason game against the Seattle Seahawks last week and said that the preseason is important for a player like him.
“It’s important to show what I can do and to show that there is talent behind the No. 1 and No. 2 guys,†said Kincade, who is listed as the No. 3 running back on the depth chart. “I believe everyone in our backfield can go in there and start. (The preseason) proves your talent, and it proves that you can play in this league.â€
Now entering his third year in the NFL, Kincade said he is more comfortable with being a professional football player and is happy to be living out his dream.
“It’s shown me how to be a professional and how I need to work hard and be consistent about it,†he said. “It’s been long, but it’s been a dream come true. I just try to work hard and represent Troup and East Texas as best that I can.â€
The Cowboys (2-0) dominated the Saints (1-1) by scoring on their first three drives of the game. Dallas was able to pick up 23 first downs to the Saint’s 12 and out-gained New Orleans in total offense 403 yards to 243.
Drew Bledsoe was 12-of-16 passing for 156 yards and two touchdowns, including a spectacular grab from Terry Glenn, who caught the ball using the defenders back to help with the catch.
New Saints’ Drew Brees and Bush had rough nights. Brees was just 7-of-12 passing for 67 yards and the reigning Heisman Trophy-winner was held to seven yards on four carries.
The Cowboys come back home this week for their third preseason game against the San Francisco 49ers Saturday at Texas Stadium.
