This ranking is not meant to be a comparison of talent levels.

Rather, the rankings are an objective opinion (i.e., guess) of how each of these guys will produce in his offense.

Also taken into account is the backup, how the quarterbacks fit their offense, the experience level of the quarterbacks and how comfortable coaches should be entering the season with their quarterbacks. advertisement

Rank . . . Team . . . Starter . . . Backup . . .The buzz

1. Louisville - Brian Brohm / Hunter Cantwell - Brohm will have Heisman-type numbers.

2. Notre Dame - Brady Quinn / Evan Sharpley - Quinn heads into season as Heisman frontrunner.

3. Ohio State - Troy Smith / Justin Zwick - Smith a nice dual threat, and Zwick is former starter.

4. Hawaii - Colt Brennan / Tyler Graunke - Brennan should lead nation in passing yards.

5. Iowa - Drew Tate / Jake Christensen - Tate struggled at times last season, and his WRs are unheralded.

6. BYU - John Beck / Jason Beck - Both are seniors, and they're not related.

7. Michigan State - Drew Stanton / Brian Hoyer - Stanton has all the tools, but needs consistency.

8. Stanford - Trent Edwards / T.C. Ostrander - Look for big numbers from Edwards.

9. Arizona State - Rudy Carpenter / Danny Sullivan - Had Sam Keller stayed on team, ASU would've been No. 1.

10. West Virginia - Pat White / Nate Sowers - White a tremendous athlete, dangerous runner. His passing needs work.

11. Nevada - Jeff Rowe / Travis Moore - Underrated Rowe a great fit for Pack's "pistol" offense.

12. Michigan - Chad Henne / Jason Forcier - After stellar freshman season, Henne slipped in '05.

13. Auburn - Brandon Cox / Blake Field - Cox's only negative is his lack of mobility.

14. Florida - Chris Leak / Tim Tebow - Look for better numbers from Leak in 2nd year in spread.

15. Miami - Kyle Wright / Kirby Freeman - Wright has tools, but his WRs are questionable.

16. Florida State - Drew Weatherford / Xavier Lee - Strong-armed Weatherford must make better decisisions.

17. LSU - JaMarcus Russell / Matt Flynn - Consistency only thing between Russell and greatness.

18. USC - John David Booty / Mark Sanchez - 2 big-time talents, but can they produce in spotlight?

19. Houston - Kevin Kolb / Blake Joseph - Kolb is 4-year starter who has thrown for 9,155 yards.

20. Iowa State - Bret Meyer / Austen Arnaud - Meyer a gifted athlete who can hurt you with his legs.

21. UTEP - Jordan Palmer / Brandis Dew - Palmer forced too many throws last season.

22. Texas Tech - Graham Harrell / Chris Todd - Coach Mike Leach plugs in a new guy in his assembly line.

23. Akron - Luke Getsy / Carlton Jackson - Getsy began at Pitt, and transfer paid off handsomely.

24. Tulsa - Paul Smith / David Johnson - Plain name, but Smith plays a good game.

25. Washington State - Alex Brink / Gary Rogers - Brink has a big-time arm, but throws too many picks.

26. Pittsburgh - Tyler Palko / Bill Stull - Palko will continue to suffer in pedestrian scheme.

27. Boise State - Jared Zabransky / Taylor Tharp - Zabransky slumped last year but should bounce back nicely.

28. Arizona - Willie Tuitama / Adam Austin - Athletic Tuitama a sophomore and still has some rough edges.

29. Utah - Brett Ratliff / Tommy Grady - Last year's starter, Brian Johnson, is redshirting this season.

33. UCF - Steven Moffett / Kyle Israel - Moffett (Winter Park) settled into job nicely last season.

34. Ole Miss - Brent Schaeffer / Seth Adams - By end of season, multi-dimensional Schaeffer could be in the top 20.

43. Texas AMStephen McGee / Ty Branyon - Big things expected from the athletic McGee.

44. South Carolina - Blake Mitchell / Chris Smelley - Beware, Mr. Mitchell. Spurrier loves Smelley, a true freshman.

45. La.-Lafayette - Jerry Babb / Michael Desormeaux - Both run well. Both throw OK. Both fit offense.

46. Maryland - Sam Hollenbach / Jordan Steffy - It's simple for Terps: Whole season is on Hollenbach.

56. Alabama - John Parker Wilson / Marc Guillon - Drop-off from the departed Brodie Croyle is large.

57. Georgia - Joe Tereshinski III / Joe Cox - If we liked to bet, we'd bet Tereshinski eventually gets replaced.

58. Fresno State - Tom Brandstater OR Sean Norton - They're battling to replace 4-year starter Paul Pinegar.

59. Arkansas - Robert Johnson / Mitch Mustain - Johnson couldn't do the job and was benched last season.

70. Indiana - Blake Powers / Graeme McFarland - Powers threw 22 TD passes last season.

76. Toledo - Clint Cochran / Brandon Summers - Rockets' only quesitonable position is QB.

98. Utah State - Leon Jackson / Bryan Black - Jackson is good runner but must improve as passer.

104. FIU - Josh Padrick / Paul McCall - Padrick (Merritt Island) has Sun Belt's best receivers to work with.

105. USF - Pat Julmiste / Matt Grothe - To call Julmiste a bad pass is to be kind.

106. Buffalo - Drew Willy / Tony Paoli - Willy struggled last season, but maybe new scheme will help.

107. Syracuse - Perry Patterson / Andrew Robinson - Patterson is a bad fit for Orange's "West Coast" offense.

108. Kent State - Michael Machen / Julian Edelman - Machen threw 18 picks last season.

109. FAU - Rusty Smith / Sean Clayton - Owls were last in Sun Belt in scoring last season.

111. Duke - Marcus Jones / Thaddeus Lewis - Projected starter Zack Asack was booted for plagiarism.

112. Eastern Michigan - Tyler Jones / Andy Schmitt - Jones must prove he can throw with consistency.

113. San Jose State - Sean Flynn / Adam Tafralis - The Spartans will rely heavily on the run this season.

114. SMU - Justin Willis / Corey Slater - Neither of these guys has taken a college snap.
115. North Texas - Daniel Meager / Matt Phillips - UNT threw for 129.3 ypg last season. Really.

119. Temple - Colin Clancy OR Shane Kelly - 2 others in mix also. One overriding theme: None are that good.

I CAN'T believe that SMU's quarterback tandem isn't at least in the top 10 if not the top 3  Obviously a SERIOUS mistake has been made :!:

22. Texas Tech - Graham Harrell / Chris Todd - Coach Mike Leach plugs in a new guy in his assembly line.

Man, both of these games are going to be awesome. I wish I could make it to that UTEP game, pesky classes...

Didn't Slater play in junior college? I would hope he got a snap if we recruited him.

Maybe he was in a rock band and quit because he wanted to be a college football QB.

NM State was 0-fer last season, and have two QBs who have never started a college game. And they're several slots above SMU.

I guess Hal Mumme trumps PB/Rusty Burns in the QB development game?

Not even close to 15hrs. Its about 640 miles from Dallas...if you drive 75 MPH then you will make it in about 8.5 hours. Not a short drive but certainly doable if you want to see your home team in person.

It's only 10. And you gain an hour going there. And the game is at night. You could leave Dallas at 8am and make it in time for a little tailgating, postgame drinks at Acetunas, etc.
