The frosh was nice, but Morestead sure had nice, high kicks and great distance. He also got his kicks up higher, faster, and had more range.

I suppose this is really a decision that Bennett doesn't want one guy doing both jobs? Give the frosh the preseason to audition for the job and then make a switch if he isn't doing it well enough?

I'm a little surprised, too. Cunningham does have a cannon of a leg, but it's not like Morstead's leg is weak, by any means, and you're right -- Morstead's kicks have great height, in addition to their distance. In the practices I've seen, Morstead has seemed a little more consistent, but Cunningham has been pretty good -- my major concern was more about the trajectory of each guy's kicks. I haven't been to practice in several days, and didn't watch the kickers as closely as I normally do the last time I was out. I will make sure to do so next time I make it to practice.

If nothing else, limiting Morstead to punting only gives him a chance, in my opinion, to be truly exceptional, a weapon that SMU hasn't had at the position in years.

Mabey Phil doesn't want the risk of one player doing all three jobs.

From what I have seen Morstead has been the FG man. Cunningham did Kick offs at the scrimmage so I wouldn't be surprised if it was a typo.

Cunningham missed an extra point in the scrimmage... I hope he doesn't have FG duties.

I agree that Morstead was awesome in the scrimmage, but just to clarify. Cunningham missed his first attempt, but it was because he lined up wrong. He spoke to a coach, and took two steps to the side instead of just one to give himself the proper angle from that point forward, and proceeded to make every other kick he attempted.

He certainly doesn't have the length, or height of Morstead though. I guess Bennett just wants him to run one job.

How long has this kid been kicking that he does not know how to line up? I have never kicked but would imagine I could see the goal posts and have an idea of the direction I need to kick the ball.

Every kicker has a different comfort zone when it comes to distance from the spot of placement and the approach angle. Consider Paul Edinger, late of the Chicago Bears and now a member (I think) of the Minnesota Vikings. He has a shorter approach to the ball than most kickers, but he takes a wider angle and turns his back to the line of scrimmage before approaching the ball and whipping his foot around in a corkscrew-type motion. He gets his power through the centrifugal force, as opposed to the speed of the approach. It looks extraordinarily goofy, but he's a pretty good kicker, nonetheless.

i believe it's a typo as well, morstead for sure is the best man for both fg and punting duties. whether or not he does only one of thos is up to pb. my original understanding is that cunningham has kickoff duty? is this right>

I believe Cunningham is doing both kickoffs and field goals. Morstead is older and gets better height, but both can absolutely crush the ball. Besides, if Cunningham doesn't get the kinks ironed out, he can stick with kickoffs and let Morstead handle punts and field goals.
Nice problem to have.

Coach repeated today at the lunch that Morestead will punt and do field goals. Cunningham is kicking off.

Well, I got to the scrimmage a little early and saw some of their warmups.
Cunningham has a ways to go on FG. Maybe it's the transition from the HS tee, but he 'sprayed' several FG attempts in warmups in addition to that blown PAT.

Morestead can hammer punts, though...
