Red McClain

Postby FordtoTolbert » Thu Aug 31, 2006 10:12 am

...cleaning out the garage this a.m. and stumbled across a Winter of 1995 SMU Mustang Club Newsletter (what a nice piece of journalism!!). In the message from the Executive Director section on the back cover, Steve Wilensky so eloquently and appropriately honored Clinton "Red" McClain who had recently passed away. Red WAS Mr. Mustang!! Some clips...

SMU was not Red's school; SMU was Red's life. He relished SMU successes. He anguished over the losses. Yet Red's fervor was not limited to athletics. He felt the same pride for the Mustang Band, the Presidential Scholars, or performers in Meadows. To Red, they all were the best because they all were Mustangs.

Red saw goodness where there was good; he found goodness when it seemed there was none to be found. What an envious philosophy of life! Few people merely liked Red. People loved Red.

I don't know what the residents of heaven are going to make of this curious angel.. If you count the etheral, we are about to break all kinds of attendance records. I bet Red will bring millions of his new friends to see his Mustangs for an eternity of autumns. And I guarantee you he has already made St Peter join the Mustang Club and has probably asked if his company has a matching gift program. If only we can figure out how to bill him!

"We love the Red...and we love the Blue...we love the Mustangs of S. M. and U!"

Thanks Steve for the GREAT memory......here's hoping for MORE fans / people around our program like RED McCLAIN.

FtoT your post brought a smile to my face. Red was without a doubt the greatest Mustang. That piece was by far my favorite of any I had the opportunity to do. Maybe we can snatch one Saturday for ole Red.

On a personal note, I miss your erascible self.
