Arkansas and Bama may get DP...and some good wishes to SMU

To all my fellow Pony fans,

All is great in South Carolina (only wish our football team was winning a little more)

Here is a link that may be of interest from one of our message boards.

<A HREF="http://pub161.ezboard.com/fsouthcarolina19141frm1.showMessage?topicID=3487.topic" TARGET=_blank>http://pub161.ezboard.com/fsouthcarolina19141frm1.showMessage?topicID=3487.topic</A>

Note the espn link in the thread as well...

I have faith that one day soon the Ponies will return to a bowl game. If you build it, they will come. Coach Bennett is building it now. One day in the not so distant past, the University of South Carolina, was in the middle of a 0-21 stretch, and the perenial doormat of the SEC...at the start of the season, we had back-to-back New Year Day Bowls...an AP pre-season rating...and with the exception of a fumble here and there...we would be on the same path this season...

Look at the glass as half full not half empty.

All my best.

Neither Arkansas or Alabama will be given the death penalty. Alabama has already been hit with sanctions that will force them to compete in the SEC with a I-AA scholarship level three years from now. If Fran can keep them competitive, he will have done an outstanding job for that program. Look for Arkansas to get the same kind of treatment. Coaches and Athletic Directors will be let go (already have?) and the NCAA will warn how close these schools came to having the death penalty imposed, but will ultimately cite the cooperation of the schools as a factor as to why they imposed lesser penalties.

Meanwhile, '06, that USC/Clemson game shapes up as HUGE for the Gamecocks this year (bowl eligibility in the balance). I've been around a lot of great rivalries (Texas/OU, UT/A$M, OU/OSU, Mich/Ohio St, Mich/Mich St, Duke/UNC, etc...) but NONE is more intense than USC/Clemson. It really is a year 'round everything imagineable included rivalry. My son is a Frosh at Clemson and much of his orientation was geared to instilling that feeling, i.e., that you MUST beat USC at everything you do. I just hope SMU can continue to improve and that our rivalry with TCU can grow into what it once was when BOTH programs were going strong.

Good luck and thanks for your continued interest in SMU.

Charleston...

While, you are probably correct that no SEC team will ever get the DP...if Bama continues it may be inevitable.

I have my Clemson-USC ticket, and tiger burn is about to begin on campus. I think the reason the mentality is that way more so at Clemson is that we (USC) are the Flagship University of the Palmetto State. We also do not have cows roaming near the stadium...In some ways we are like the SMU, the UVA, and Clemson is like the TCU or the Virginia Tech.

State Bowl weekend is a huge one all around for Gamecock Athletics...we open a brand new state of the art arena that Friday with our women's BBall vs. Clemson; Clemson - USC Saturday; and then our Men's opener that Sunday.

All my best. Good luck vs. UTEP.
