WHEN WILL YOU PEOPLE SEE THE REAL PROBLEM? NAME COACH NEEDED

Here is the deal for you Metroplex Pony Fans:

Hiring the next up and comming coach in college football is not going to get SMU from out of the gutters of college football. The reason being is that 85% of College Football Games are won with recruiting. Therefore, unless we have a name coach, whom a recruit can identify with, we will never get to the next level. Furthermore, if SMU continues to only recruit Texas players then we will continue to get Texas, A&M, Tech, and TCU leftovers. I am sure most of you would agree Mack Brown is a good coach. Well 30 years ago the guy coached at Tulane and he was somewhat of a joke there. My point being, the only reason Texas is good is because the University of Texas can recruit good players, not because Mack Brown is a football genious. THAT IS WHY I AM SCREAMING FOR SMU NEXT YEAR TO HIRE A COACH WHO IS KNOWN FROM COAST TO COAST (even if he is on life support). I am so ashamed of my college losing last week to Dallas.

You must not read this site much. There are plenty on here who acknowledge that Mack Brown is a dominant recruiter, but also many who think he can't coach to save his life.

Um .... what?

Maybe he meant he's ashamed of "losing Dallas"....
Which we did.

You mean Mack is one of 500 coaches who could win in Austin?
I'd love to hear DeLoss use that line someday.

We never "had Dallas" to lose.

Wow, that's a load of crap. Last I checked Mack Brown has a title and has the highest winning percentage of any coach since 2000. How can you say that's just because of talent? Talent can't run around the field and miss blocking assignments or run the wrong route and still win football games.

As far your Tulane comment, MB was there for 3 years and in that time he took a 1-10 team and made them a bowl team by his last year. Phil Bennett hasn't done that in 5. MB also took a no-name, crappy No. Carolina team and made them a perennial top 10 team by the time of his departure. Say what you will, but the guy is able to coach. There is not the kind of talent at Tulane or No. Carolina that there is at Texas.

Phil Bennett is a better coach than most on here would give him credit for. I still believe he'll have the ship righted by the end of the season.

Again, you people are missing the point. Bill Walsh couldn't take SMU in the right direction with the players we presently have. Plus, I think Bill Bennett is a garbage recruiter. I mean can you imagine that scary guy Bennett, with that Crazy Mustache and all coming into your house and trying to recruit you? Bottom line point, without a "NAME" Coach, who can say you know me and you know what I have done in the past, a really top level player will never attend SMU.

Nola80, I think what you're saying will hold some water when we see the Coach Doherty recruiting success play out over the next few years. Ryan Harp is a good example.

Nola80...if 80 is when you graduated HS, that makes you about the same age as another Nola-tied Pony, Reggie Dupard.

I am sorry, but you don't know what you are talking about. Phil Bennett can recruit. Now, if you want to argue that Bennett can't recruit at SMU because of the way he is running this program, then fine. If you want to argue that Bennett can't recruit at SMU because of recruiting restrictions, fine. If you want to argue he can't develop talent, fine. If you want to argue he is not targeting the right kids, fine. If you want to argue he can't coach, fine. The guy, when given the opportunity one on one, can sell it. I am not here to defend Bennett in any way, but criticize him for the right things.

that makes a lot of sense. He can sell it but he can't do the other things you listed? I feel like I am listening to the same kind of people who said "just give Dave Campo a chance". These are Bennetts guys, after 4 years and we are a laughing stock. It is you people who are content with failure that keeps us at the bottom. Oh, and what recruiting restrictions do we still have in 2006, and what are they from?
