Calvin Watkins no longer covering SMU

Don't know if it is immediate, but I would think it is. But with all of the changes at the DMN, Jacque Taylor is now a columnist, Todd Archer is the lead Cowboys beat writer, Calvin is now the Cowboys backup writer.

SMU's new writer is HS Kate Hairopolous. Get ready for average reporting. Another reason why the DMN doesn't give a flip about covering SMU.

Kate will probably be at the Sam Houston game.

sounds appropriate-a high school reporter covering a game against a high school team Sam Houston High School.

Don't we have journalist majors at SMU?

Hey here is a novel idea, let our own journalist majors cover SMU. We could work out some kind of compensation with the DMN, and also let our students get experience. We could have 20 journalists covering all aspects of SMU.

I wonder if she will cover the UT vs Sam Houston St. game next week? Did she cover the UT vs NTS game too?

I wonder if that's why Calvin went after Bennett this week - he knew he was leaving.

If that's what it takes to get the tough questions asked, then lets get a new person each week

I can confirm the change. It is effective immediately. I assume Kate will be there today. Yes, she covered HS before this, but guess what? Watkins covered HS before the SMU beat as well. So, there ya go.

From the DMN College Football blog:

I'm sitting here with Kate Hairopoulos watching some football on television waiting for SMU to take on the big and bad Sam Houston State Bearkats. It's SMU's home opener; plenty of seats available. However, there are plenty of recruits on the sidelines. That's a good thing for SMU, which needs good recruits. Looks like a lot of orange in the stands. Those are Sam Houston State's colors.
