Another reason for optimism

OK, we're all breathing a little better now. We played a bad team, we were supposed to beat them, and we did -- convincingly.

Now the competition gets better. Arkansas State is a decent team (they hung with Southern Miss for three quarters in their bowl game), and they're fast and athletic. This game is no lay-up, by any means.

However, I find some level of optimism in the fact that while we smacked Sam Houston around, our best players haven't played that well yet. They haven't been awful, but they haven't played up to the standards we all have for them. Bobby Chase, Justin Rogers, Joe Sturdivant, Adrian Haywood -- they've shown flashes, but haven't reached the levels of performance that garnered preseason accolades.

Some guys get a pass: DeMyron Martin is hurt. Teams are scared to kick to Jessie Henderson (I would be, too).

But when those other guys crank their play up a few notches, we'll have a better chance to compete against some of the better teams remaining on our schedule.

Go Ponies! Beat Arkansas State!

Isn't SMU down to it's 3rd-string RB now?

Yep. Not good at running back.

That's true, but thankfully, our third-string RB (Mapps) is better than some starters we've had before. I guess the theory of stockpiling RBs is proving to be prophetic.

Too bad Massey's gone. He'd be a good fit right about now.
