Oscar Giles

I can't believe Coach Giles is going to Houston. It has to be a financial move - they have a long road back to respectability -- longer than ours. But this also hurts us, because Coach Giles is a young, charismatic man who has rightly earned the reputation of being a very good recruiter.

I have no doubt that Coach Bennett has legions of contacts who can find a very able replacement, but I'm very sorry to see Coach Giles go. He's a really good guy, and I wish him well.

I'm sorry to see Coach Giles go. I once bumped into him when he was stopping for some lunch at Bailey's First & 10, and he invited me to sit down, and we talked SMU football for 2 hours. He couldn't have been nicer, and was appreciative of the SMU fans who have such interest in the team's success. He's a terrific guy, and I wish him all the best. Hopefully we'll see him back coaching at SMU one day.

Right on, Diehard. I'd love to see OG back in Big D, recruiting and coaching for the Ponies. He's a good guy.

You should have asked him to explain our defense to you....you would have been there for four days!!!!!!

On the Houston board they state that he wants to be closer to his hometown of Palacios, which I guess is somewhere near Houston. Otherwise seems very strange to lose him to UofH. I'm sure there is much more to this than I know. At any rate Bennet should be able to fill the spot without any trouble. Since I presume we are running the same defense as K State, which has been tremendously successful, I don't understand your comment that it would take 4 days to explain it.

Houston does pay its assistants more than SMU does, I think.
But you're right - Coach Bennett should have no trouble filling that spot on his coaching staff.

Nacho:

I was making a "joke". It would have taken OG four days, because he didn't know it. He never did. His players knew it better than he did.

That went right over my head. Sorry about the confusion. Sometimes I'm a little slow.

OG coached defensive ends, right? It sure didn't take Don Ieremia-Stansbry long to get acclimated to the position, and despite being seriously undersized, Melvin Williams and even Khalid Beard had some decent performances. I'd like to see what Coach Giles could do with some bigger guys, like Desmond Jones and Lucky DeLay.

Has anyone heard any candidates to replace Giles?

I heard that former DT standout Chris Post might have a shot at contributing! There is a lot of talk at the great job he did at the high school level this year. I am positive that he could get the job done, and done well.

I heard that he was in Irving somewhere? It would be great to get a former Mustang back on the Hilltop. That is one thing that we don't have enough of. We need more former players coming back to their alma mater to coach.

Think he was helpful in recruiting Lucky Delay and Zach Hall?
