Running back DeMyron Martin will play Saturday at UTEP.
Martin wasn't expected to return until next week from a dislocated bone and a small fracture in his right foot that he suffered against North Texas on Sept. 9.
"He came to us on Monday and said, 'I want to play,' " said coach Phil Bennett, who earlier this week had said Martin wouldn't play against UTEP.
Martin, a sophomore, didn't practice Tuesday, but he had a handful of carries Wednesday and more Thursday before leaving early because of a class conflict.
"He looked good, no pain," Bennett said. "There's a reason he's our first-team back."
SMU has all of its injured running backs available. Johnnie Fitzgerald and Fred Turner were healthy last week at Tulane, but Bennett chose not to use them.
Martin was SMU's leading rusher last season with 854 yards and seven touchdowns.
