Lead story on 6:00 news

Postby DickerJames » Mon Oct 09, 2006 6:51 pm

Our little sordid affair was THE lead story on the Ch. 11 6:00 news tonight. Leading off before the North Korea nuke test news proves we have finally made the big time.

Some asked for more media coverage. Now we got it.

This is what happens when you don't diffuse situations and are reactive rather than proactive. Well done school administartion, let the incident fester until UT/OU and Cowboys/Eagles have finished.

There is the link to the video of the report.

I can't believe that this crazy guy told the DPD it was a hate crime! How do you go some place that far away from campus (which is where you live) to a football player's residence (I will not assume he was going to visit a friend because it FAR too late to tell an important detail like that) and have the audacity to call it a hate crime? That's outrageous. :x

I would expect him to have a cool demenor on camera. What worried me was the revelation that the decision to suspend came after hearing Justins side of the story.

What worries me is a few things.

1. The ESPN story said there were 3 players involved, but is Justin the only to get suspended?
2. Posts earlier that stated the compaintent had stated he was going to ruin Justins life.
3. SMU will bow to anyone to save face, so I could see them coming down [deleted] Justin to satisfy the outside influences.

I don't have a good feeling about this, I am afraid this is going to drag on, and Justin's father didn't seem too pleased with the support SMU had given his son. SMU could have messed this one up big time

Yes, Willis was the only one suspended and it saddens me to hear that it is NOW a hate crime because Justin said FA_ to Beard.

I hope this does not drag out for weeks.

I'm ready to get driven over by a bus, however here is my two cents. I am not equating one incident (SMU with what happened at Duke), however how the school reacts in these situations is important. What happened at Duke is a good example of not dealing with a situation i.e. a complaint against athletes and letting it grow to a tremendous level before reacting. SMU acted quickly on a sensitive situation to protect both the school and the students. If it plays out as a minor issue, which probably it will, the student athlete is protected from cries of privledge (which will happens at all schools). The school comes across as being proactive about the incident and the Athletic Department is covered. The claimant will have seen action, even if it is finally 'thrown' out. Having been around lacrosse for nearly 30 years, many stories had come out of Durham about the lacrosse players for many years about 'getting away' with things. When something big finally hit the fan, the lack of action hurt the school, the program and finally the players who were painted as spoiled rich kids (although most came from public schools). While I hated to see the loss of a talented player for even a single game, it is better than what happened at Duke with a cancelled season and many ruined lives... I wish for Justin justice and open minds on and off campus.

Is this going to be the football equivalent to the basketball programs "Burger and Cheer" fiasco?

no - the burgers and cheers turned out to be a good thing. This is at minimum a useless distraction.

This whole situation makes me sick. I just hate the fact this story leads off the news, and that Justin's name and hate crime are mentioned in the same sentence. From now on, right or wrong, Justin will be remembered for this, and it makes me sick to think that this might have been exactly what the "victim" was looking for when he showed up at that apartment last Thursday night.

The really sad part is that when this all blows over and Justin is able to resume his career, the story of how he was exonerated will not lead off the news (and probably won't be on the news at all).

I wish the best for Justin, and hope to see him back in a Mustang uniform soon.
